It seems like a rite of passage for many girls today to get multiple tattoos soon after they turn 18 (I know Rachel is 19). I just feel so uneasy about it because of their permanent nature and as someone in my mid-twenties now, I know that the person you are constantly changes throughout your life.
I've seen people comment that they find bodypainting to obscure the natural beauty of a woman, but it's entirely reversible, whereas tattoo removal is difficult and at best with lasers requires a huge amount of time, pain and expense.
I also question the safety of inserting chemical inks into the skin which have been shown to migrate through the body. Although black ink is generally considered safer than coloured inks, people still have to ask what the ink contains which is a pigment known as carbon black which is derived from incomplete internal combustion, and anything that involves combustion results in chemical by products known as PAH's which are known carcinogens.
In the past, it was mainly men who got tattooed, but now more young women have tattoos than young men, and the effects are not widely studied enough.
As for the beauty aspect, isn't it argued by philosophers that something is beautiful because it's ephemeral sort of like spring blossoms or autumn leaves or life itself.
Sorry for my rant, and please ignore me as I am only 1 out of millions of people, but I am just concerned at the rate at which teenage girls/women are getting tattooed. My friend wants to be a flight attendant, half her body is covered in tattoos.
I love Tattoos, and am so happy more mostwam girls are getting them! It is the sign of the times as its the "in" thing, but tattoos on a girl is just so HOT! in my eyes.
