It only lasted 15 seconds before we had to cut the back of it open. I couldn't breath at all.

That's fucking terrifying... Also, sometimes instead of a safe word, you need a safe motion etc.
I had some wam experience in morphsuits/zentai and yes it's a little bit hard to breath when the mask get soaked with water or other substances. but if you stretch the textile in front of your mouth and blow air before inspire, you can clean the fibers and the mask get breatheble again for some minutes. it depends on the thikness of your substances. also the mask don't inflate like a balloon. so with this tecnique you can breathe at least one time before unzip the mask nd don't go in panic.

My substances are all very thick and slippery. Every breath either inflated the mask or pulled it far into my mouth. My sub couldn't undo the zipper so we used a pair of safety shears we always keep in a room when we do role or restriction play. If it were water or a thinner substance it wouldn't have been too bad, but imagine being covered head to toe in gak soaked fibers that formed a perfect seal around you.
