Does anyone know how I can make a bulk amount of custard in one go. I'm thinking a Buckets worth. Thinking it'd be cheaper to make with powder and less waste than pre made. But not sure how to go about it.
Firstly, never actually done it with custard, but I've mixed buckets of gravy.
I'd try instant custard mix - read the instructions it will be easier finding one that makes with just water not milk. Birds do both a custard powder and an instant custard mix - the powder wants milk, the mix just wants boiling water. From their instructions it looks like you will want about 2kg to 10 litres of water. If you get a reasonably heavy power drill and decent sized plaster mixing attachment, it won't be too bad. It will need boiling water to thicken but will then take a good while to cool, the surface will cool much more rapidly than the centre. Mix it up every 10 mins or so. It will probably take an hour to cool.

Thanks
I've done big batches in a huge pot on the stove with custard powder and using half the recommended amount of milk, and the rest water (to save money even further)
I usually need two of my big pots to fill a bucket but will depend on the size of your pots/pans
it also requires a lot of stirring and be careful not to let it scorch - time consuming but a slightly lower heat is much better especially once it starts to thicken
be careful once done to let it cool for at least 3 hours, it holds the heat really well - you might be able to get away with an hour if you keep going back to stir it
also put a layer of cling film touching the surface of the custard so it doesn't develop a 'skin'
