We have used Tylose before although can't remember what grade. Tylose is a Hydroxyethylcellulose, exactly the same as Natrosol although some would have you believe that you have to have Natrosol ! There are lots of different grades of Hydroxyethylcellulose as with Natrosol so I would suggest trying a small amount to start with but think you guys in America now have an easy source for a Natrosol equivalent.
For anybody in the UK we are currently clearing our stocks and have Methylcellulose and Carboxyethylcellulose at £13.99 and £10.99 respectively. I also have around 500kg of powder paint to shift if any of you want to buy any bulk colouring for your gunge. We're selling this at £18.99 for 9kg including postage.
Heres a link to the Carboxy Ethyl, check our other items for sale for the paint etc.
Methyl is basically an industrial grade and is used as the base for detergents and shampoos. Ethyl is "food grade" and is used as a thickener for frosting, gravies, etc. It's also the base for "personal lubricants" such as Astroglide.
The last time I bought a batch from the chemstore, they had already dropped methylcellulose, so I had to switch. It has pretty much the same properties, but I found that I can use very slightly less powder to get the same thickness.
