Happens all the time. Im too nice when people give me some bs story about why they can't pay half up front deposit. Im done. Sadly I now have to be an asshole about it because everytime someone dicks me over. Oh well. Ha!! I have food and a plane ticket so screw it!!
Sorry to hear of more people ditching. For what it's worth, I think the half-up-front method is perfectly acceptable, and there's no need to feel bad about sticking to that (so to speak). You can (and are) still be nice while still protecting your plans and schedule.

See, if only they'd drawn the right lottery numbers yesterday I'd've been able to chuck in my job and be free during the week..... Also I'd've been rich beyond the dreams of avarice.
