People on here that wear them-how long do you like yours to be?
As someone who's into them even when not involving WAM, I've always wanted to ask this and figured I would do it here.
I personally think it's hot when they graze the ground, even better when they drag on the ground.
I briefly talked to a girl the summer after getting my degree who wore them probably 80% of the time in the summer and was MAYBE 5'2 and instead of tying a knot or something she would just let it drag the ground while she walked. Meanwhile my girlfriend likes them at ankle length or maybe a bit longer. Thought it couldn't hurt to ask how long you all like yours.
I don't usually wear a lot of long dresses or skirts (I like mine above the knee), but when I do I I don't want anything dragging on the ground. That's a good way to ruin them just by wearing them but also I don't want to accidentally step on it and tear it or worse, trip and fall on my face.

That's why you have a large sheet cake set in front of you or a large mudpit to break your fall

back in the day that was the point of them being stupidly long, it was a statement of wealth, " look i have enough money i can afford to ruin / tril dresses on the floor"
as for myself really long dresses i prefer with a slit, i do have a couple of velvet dresses which are ankle length without slits as the heavier velvet ones tend not to try and trip you up, the lighter weight ones are the ones for that as they wrap around your legs esp if they are a large wide skirt type, and thats dry.
as for wet, prefer them mid calf or shorter to mini, not like wearing thin and maxi / very long for rain or getting soaked when out for a walk, they ok at home where walking is limited, like just play etc,
the velvet ones are good is they not going to stretch alot and stay or get to ankle length when wet, really do love the weight of a longer heavy dress when wet or messy with the normal width hem / skirt type velvet dresses i tend to wear a slip thats full length too if i know i'll be going for a long walk and getting soaked, i find they can be a bit harsh on skin if they got just the right amount of grip on your ankles or lower legs as you walk when wet, either bare legs or stockings, they can grab at those.
when i go for a messy walk though the longer velvet dresses are really good esp when its a bit colder as i often, when its not actully freezing cold, go to my local supermarket which is about a 30min direct walk home, buy a load of messy stuff like triffles, custard jams etc and walk back home pouring them all inside my dress, the longer velvet and some heavier fabric dresses feel really nice all slippery and heavy and its a while before the mess shows through, unless i'm going for the "let it fall through quick" set up of no knickers and stockings/ bare legs.
as for accidental heels through them, yeah, you learn that one quickly lol, been a number of times i done that, mostly when i squat down to dip the hem into some mud and stand up, the heel can catch.
once when i was coming back from a cemetery visit (wildlife photography session) and i was wearing a long black velvet dress we noticed the foot path was flooded in the under pass, i habded my gf my bag with the other lenses in it and waded down with my camera ad took some images, had no intention of getting wet or muddy that day but photography lends its self well to getting wet or muddy
it was around febuary one year i think and it was cold but sunny, i thought i was going to freeze but the velvet dress kept me warm even as it was wet upto my chest
I have two and don't like them any longer than ankle length because of the whole tripping and dragging on the ground thing that was mentioned already. Also I don't want it long enough to get in the way of driving. I'm 5'8" so usually that's not much of a problem but it's come up.
edit: Also they're usually a summer thing but I don't like it when they're sleeveless. I have one that I'll wear something with sheer sleeves underneath for that exact reason.
