I've always been into the "euw" factor of WAM/Splosh. Interestingly with strict boundaries. Think beans and mushy peas, but not dog food (or anything non-vegetarian for that matter).
I recently bought some Natrosol gunge powder, which was amazing by the way! To give it a slight edge I set out to add some odour to it. The best I could manage to achieve an euw factor was banana flavouring. I've disliked bananas for as long as I can remember, and this flavouring was synthetic - kind of like what you'd get with medicine - so sort of fit the bill.
So onto my question. Is smell a big factor in your preferences? What types of smells get you going? And what can you recommend to add scent to an otherwise odourless messy substance?

Smell is especially for memories that bring joy and the smell of seasons like autumn
To add scent you can use cologne or perfume or even aspects of previous products used while growing up
Smell really adds to it for sweet things for me I think - I like savoury wam but whether really stinky or not it doesn't really change the turn on factor for me.
But the smell of heavily vanilla laden cake batter? Melted chocolate? Damn. Huge turn on

Explains a certain groan we may have heard from Candy on occasion wgen the double thick, gloriously gloppy vanilla custard hits....
Smell is also important to me with my messy play, but in a different way than most.
As Curiouspaints said, the smell can be a connection. I grew up on a farm, so for me, the smell of barnyard muck and straw put me immediately in a dizzying happy headspace.
I also seek out other smelly things to play in - swampy mud, grease, spray cream after it melts away, as I get a charge out of being stinky. It clicks into my humiliation mindset, and I actively seek out smells that will linger on my hair and skin afterwards and experiment with methods make smells stay on me longer, such as wrapping up in clingfilm. Limburger cheese, for example, is smelly up front, but the smell washes away quickly.
One of the challenges with this focus is that you go noseblind to smells and don't notice it much, even if others do. (but then if I can find a dom to play with who crinkles their nose and tells me that I'm smelly, it pushes buttons for me).
As the OP mentioned, Banana extract is good and strong, and I've added that to pies on a regular basis. For me, I had a banana cream pie in the first pie eating contest I entered, so that triggers some happy memories.
So, I'd love to hear from others here about substances that you have found to be stinky and that linger.
I'm quite focused on scents, and find mess with no odour almost has something missing from the experience. It's hard to describe; more obviously pleasant smells like custard etc are more enjoyable than no scent, but then out of smellier things, some get me going and some just don't. Swampy and sulphurous smelling mud is something I love and seek out specifically, and I've yet to find a limit of "too smelly" in that. Whereas savoury foods like beans and mushy peas, I can tolerate but I'm just thinking "nah, this isn't it" the whole time. I'm kind of intrigued by mayo or some of the cheeses people have used - that might be the kind of smelly I could enjoy. I've seen a couple of companies selling scent sprays as a special effects thing, with names like "Swampy Marsh" or worse, and I might investigate those some time...

I have ordered some of these, and I've yet to find any that really compare to nature. There's always a chemical overtone that keeps it from hitting the same notes. I'm always seeking, though.
I'm with Robby- a bad smell can easily end the session early. Not just the bad "toilet-type" smells either, overly sweet/sickly smells are session killers for me. Its the main reason I can't use custard (or ice-cream), overpowering sweet-vanilla smells make me want to vom.

I think smell to quite a few people is an important factor. We've done a few savoury shoots where the smell was so bad models were almost sick. The scene with Keely and Chrissy in the sticks had some pretty awful smelling stuff as did the scene with Jess West being gunged with food.
By contrast, you mention adding a banana extract to gunge, We have offered a Lemon Scented Gunge for many years and it's always been very popular.
In my experience, the concept of smelly WAM is a turn in because of the additional humiliation, but in personal practice it is an unpleasant distraction. I save the smelly stuff for videos and stories.

Off topic, but please tell me they actually have banana flavored medicine in the UK. That would literally make my day.

They do! Did when I was a kid and when my daughter was young too
For me I find any bad smells really off putting. I'm not saying I want everything to smell amazing, but if the general aroma is bad then I won't get the same enjoyment. When it's really strong in a bad way I would find that quite off putting.
When something is so strong you still notice it two+ showers later then that does take away from the fun too.
Sweet smells are great (though I don't like vanilla) and if things are quite neutral or don't have a real odour that's fine. The smell of natrasol/gunge/powder paint is what is is; fine by me and I would say as it's a fairly unique smell it does add to the memory.

This was/is awesome stuff - when circumstances allow I'll be back for some more of that!
