Anyone have any tips to create a mud pit? I want to make a waist-deep pit, if anyone has any tips in how to avoid it to dry up or something else, anything that could be helpful, would be appreciated!
Hi, Several experienced people on here..Where are you thinking indoor or outdoor? An outdoor pit would benefit from digging out insulating from ground using peat/straw etc then lining with a pond liner etc You can then fill mix etc. You would need a good supply of water to stop it drying out...Or try and find a natural or clay pit etc. Where are you based??
I am trying to make it outdoor, to be precise I'm building it inside a forest since I don't have a backyard, the location where I am building have a fountain close by (for washing clothes no one uses it though) so that where I can take my water from, and I was thinking to use the mud I dug to create the mud pit, I also thought of using a tarp under the pit to avoid water drainage, just not sure if that would work since is summer, also im based in Italy, and there are no clay pit anywhere close me sadly

Hi this would be ok but it would be a lot of hard work but worth it in the end the tarp would work for a liner. You would need to get any stones out so perhaps getting some clay from a pottery supplies would help. You would need to use it or water it often as I'd imagine now in Italy it's very warm! Is there anywhere in the forest naturally wet or boggy? This would be your best option.

Hhhm wet or boggy, not sure I usually go out early morning to avoid being spotted, even though I don't think people go daily there, but I prefer to be safe, and I personally can't tell if there is a spot that is like the one you asked for exactly because of the time im going out
I would love to get some pottery clay but sadly is quite expensive, cannot afford it
I think that the most important part is the consistence of mud, not so wet that looks like dirty water and not so dry to be a pit of sand, It has to be gooey and smooth
You're digging in a forest- so it'll be harder work than normal due to the tree roots.
Also you'll need to take a little care if you're making the mud with the spoils from you're hole- try to pull out as many of the roots/rocks ect as possible, finding one in the mud might ruin the fun.
Covering the pit over will help prevent the top drying out- stack a load of branches over the cover to prevent people from accidentally falling in it.

yep I already started digging and found some roots, but I could easily cut them, also about rocks I tried removing them as many as possible while digging, I already saw some branches that I can use to cover my mud pit, they are quite thick and I think they will be able to hold enough weight in case someone steps on them, didn't know covering the mud pit would help to avoid it to dry on top though
I also have been experimenting myself by making a small mud pit knees size and the rocks hurt indeed lol, the location I chose doesn't seem to have people hanging out throwing trash etc though since it's always clean, I really can't wait to finish it and dive in it lol
