For those of you lucky enough to live in the good old US of A, Ellen's Game of Games is on this evening at 10:00 (9:00 Central) on NBC. Let's see if she lives up to the quality of clips from her other show in the morning/afternoon. The only reason I put this up was because I didn't see anyone else list it. Enjoy and Happy whatever it is you celebrate this time of year
This show seems so promising - there's also a clip where what looks like a cannon of chocolate syrup is shot at a girl.
On her daytime show (which this kind of spins off from), Ellen's done a pie-in-the-face type game too, but I haven't seen that in any promos.
It's too bad this is just a primetime event with six hour-long shows planned, and not a daily game show thing. This would have the potential to be the next messy game show in the tradition of Double Dare or Family Challenge (something which I've been wondering if we'll ever have again).
Is this the rare prime-time TV show that might offer a LITTLE mess? Yes. Is that reason to celebrate? Yes, but barely.
The good = There's at least one decent messy scene, where a woman gets sprayed with chocolate sauce. Good coverage, even with goggles. The bad = Based on that picture, the game where the woman "falls" into a giant pie results in basically nothing. Also, the Tuba game apparently only results in good messy coverage for a guy. (Which, considering the audience is 90% female and only 15% of the games are messy, is some insane odds to fuck up....)
The who knows = So 6 shows total? And probably not renewed? If I had to guess, the chocolate sauce game is gonna be the only keeper.
As always, the gold standard for this kind of modern game show is Spellmageddon. It wasn't perfect, but it offered a LOT of messy stunts, plus the bonus that ALL the remaining contestants had to participate (not just one person). So there was always one female in the mix, and sometimes 2 or 3. Plus, their "fall into a giant pie" game was perfectly done. (And, sadly, never duplicated.)
Seeing that the Ellen show looks to air even fewer episodes than Spellmageddon, it just feels like a wasted opportunity more than anything.
Spell-Mageddon is a great call, Rich. I've never understood why that show didn't get more love. (I guess there just aren't that many people around anymore who are all about the mainstream clips - especially all about game shows). Distraction had a few decent moments too. But, it's been pretty lean times lately for these kind of shows.
I know there are a lot of Spanish-language shows we could probably cite, but I'm far less interested in those. The reactions (pre and post-mess) are just way less fun to me when I don't understand the language.
I also think Ellen will be mostly a missed opportunity. It's just too grand in scope - we'd be far better off if this were a lower-budget show on a cable network. Like, this would be super fun if it were a pull-from-the-audience show like WWYD.

Previews for next week look to have a lot more mess on the show. Appeared that woman were to be dropped into shaving cream and then some sort of slime as well.
