Hi everyone,
I have a question for the producers on UMD.
How long does it normally take for a custom video to be made?
I know depending on the script, scheduling, and editing, what would you say the average time frame should be? What is considered a reasonable time frame to be completed?

Depends. model availability, clothing, studio time.
I had one done by Rev Slym, started discussing that in early March and it was filmed and sent in May but there were a lot of logistical aspects to it (script, outfits, etc.)
IMO, if a custom takes a while to plan it's a good thing. If you have a finished product back to you within a day, it's either absolutely perfect or it's absolutely awful and I've had both happen to me (luckily the latter cost me maybe $50 but there was zero communication whatsoever).

It honestly depends on what my real life schedule is. But I would say I can range from 2 days to 2 weeks! If it will be longer, I am specific in telling you so and will not accept any money until I give you a date! Hope this helps!

I don't think there really is a "normal" custom video timeframe. You need to talk to your chosen producer about their workflow: when the shoot is scheduled and how long it takes to edit and deliver the files. Six months feels pretty damn long, though.

With me, it depends on when I can film, and I normally don't take payment till I am able to film and get it to the customer withing 7 business days. I have heard lots of stories of customers waiting months and to me, I won't take on one untill I know I have time that I'm able film. Unfortunately I have more than one job outside of here, plus life and family, so that's why I don't like to accept payment till I'm ready and able to.
I had one done in a reasonable amount of time, but it wasn't anything like what I had asked for. When I questioned the producer about this, they told me that if they'd only done what I asked (and paid) for, they wouldn't be able to get many sales after it was put up for general sale. I won't name the producer but it put me off of asking anyone for a custom after that experience. I do know there are some very respectable people offering customs and having happy customers though.

Can confirm all this! Bratty customs are the best and she is very responsive and open.

We loved making your fantastic custom, and were so happy you were so delighted with it, but just to avoid any confusion for those reading, from receiving Barry's shooting script to delivering the film, the timeframe was 3 weeks (and from receiving full payment to receipt of the scene was even less).
I know exactly what you are saying...we initially discussed various options etc with no commitment or pressure, to ensure you were happy with how you wanted to proceed. That's something I am always happy to do.
I just think that in this sort of thread, the concern some people (like the OP) have, is 'how long after I have paid my money should I expect the scene?', so I just wanted to clarify that in this case it was 3-4 weeks, which is about how long it takes for me to do Scroggle's great HGD scenes too.

This. Conversations about script, content, money, mess, all of that falls in pre-production. Once the contract is signed and money starts changing hands, it should take as long to *produce* as was originally agreed.
Now, life happens, but in a professional relationship, it should be the responsibility of the producer to proactively contact the client and either refund the fee or offer an alternative if the original schedule isn't being met.
When I was gigging more regularly and hiring side musicians, I always paid my players at the beginning of the gig. They showed up and delivered. But I never paid them before that point because they needed to render services before getting paid. And there was never any question as to how much they got unless we were splitting tips as a bonus.
I still got stood up by musicians who bailed on engagements at the last minute, but I was never out any money.

All this. I mean, some producers are going to take longer depending on their existing list of obligations ahead of you but these things should be discussed snd set in stone before any money changes hands. If they say "i dunno" or can't give you a concise timetable, then I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Our rule for customs has always been:
Initial discussions and outline in advance, and come to final agreed specification for what the scene will be, who will be in it, and what it will contain, and agree a final price.
Once a spec is agreed and signed off, 50% deposit is paid.
We then guarentee to produce the scene and get it delivered to the customer within three months of deposit payment date, failing which, deal is cancelled and customer gets a full refund.
Three months might sound like quite a long time but when there are multiple moving pieces that need to be meshed up, in terms of model availability, esp if multiple models, people get sick, unexpected period problems, etc - and still allowing time to shoot the scene properly and with attention to detail. We also always shoot customs first in a day's shooting, so everyone is fresh and fully alert, as customs are trickier, you have to get them absolutely right. If the girls go off-script in one of our own scenes, we can just roll with it. If that happens in a custom you have to scrap the shoot and start again, probably on a different day if the outfits need washing etc and we don't have duplicates.
We would also absolutely never try and change a custom to something "more saleable". That flies in the face of what a custom scene is. The customer's spec should be followed as exactly as humanly possible, with zero deviations. If the result is a scene that will only appeal to a very few people, that's fine, as all the costs plus a profit margin should have been built in to the price.
In our case on pricing, what someone pays for a custom will be:
All model fees.
Full cost of all supplies used.
Full costs of any outfit items needed to be bought specifically for the scene[1].
An allowance for heating, lighting, snacks and drinks, and part of the models' post-shoot meal.
£50 profit.
VAT at 20% of the total price.
[1] We don't charge for using items we already have, as being worn and messed up is what our wam wardrobe is for, but if someone wants something very specific buying for a custom, then it'll be charged for, or they can source the item and send it to us.
At the moment we aren't pursuing custom work as various business demands mean I can't guarentee to be able to give it the complete focus it needs, but we may come back to doing them in future, though given the way inflation has eroded the value of money recently, prices will almost certainly rise.

That's Reasonable. I have been noticing that most producers on here do request for 50% up front and 50% at completion. It was requested for the full amount to be given up front before a confirmed date. Now it's also to the point where they are not even responding to any emails.
