I know whipped cream can leave sour smell in the nose; does cool whip do that?
Whipped cream from a spray can (particularly here in the U.S.) "deflates" very quickly. Whipped cream made from scratch would be better. Personally I like cool whip, but thick "real" whipped cream is good, too.
I don't have a sense of smell, so I have no idea from personal experience, but from what "everybody" says, whipped cream, cool whip, or anything made with real dairy (cream) leaves a sour smell. My understanding is that non-dairy cool whip or whipped cream doesn't.
I normally use whipped cream frosting. It doesn't require any preparation, doesn't smell bad and you can leave it out for ages without any adverse effects.

Hmmm.
Sorry. I like a thick, unidentifiable mess.Thats my thang. Whipped cream wipes off too easily.
That's true. Whipped cream won't "pile up" like shaving cream. It's more natural, which can be good or bad. I don't know if models were just being kind before or what, but now that I use a lot more whipped cream, they all tell me how much they dislike SC.
I'm in the very small minority in that I prefer to make my own whipped cream from heavy cream. I can control the consistency to get that perfect sloppy/sticky mix!
I use cool whip (a large container) and a a can of frosting, mixed together, it gives very nice thick pies, but not too think and stick and cover great.. also will stand up to some smashing and playing.

Yeah, each have their pros and cons as I'm sure you know.
Personally I don't think anything beats the look of shaving cream, and in my personal opinion, the feel either. The burn can also be negated if you use the right stuff (Gillette red can IMO).
That said it can be a lot more fun when you use something that is edible, which is obviously where cool whip shines. It has decent coverage too.
To answer OP's question, whipped cream from a can just sucks, melts, and stinks. I can't think of any advantages.
Home made whipped cream? Alright, but can melt too.
