Thanks! That was the other hit I saw on a Mark or Hurley tape ages ago, but much better quality now!! I originally thought it was a shaving cream pie, now I can tell it's not....
Jedi, thanks for seemingly pulling off the impossible and getting this thread back on track. And, of course, thanks for the clip.
As for the thing that Norman remembers reading about Marie getting pied on the Love Boat (not on the show itself, but in an apparently behind-the-scenes moment on the boat itself), I think I've located what must be it (unless TV Guide also mentioned this exact same thing.) Here's an article from a 1982 issue of People covering Marie's impending marriage and her appearance as a guest star on the Love Boat: http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20082578,00.html
If you just want the pie related moment of this article, here it is:
As the Love Boat crew throws confetti and toasts champagne (Hawaiian Punch for Marie), the camera pans to Marie talking with her brother (played by Donny Osmond). Disguised as a steward, he pulls out a cream pie and shoves it in Marie's face and shouts: "Cute, Marie, reeeeeeeeeal cute!"
I doubt the author was intentionally trying to be confusing, but there are some puzzlers here. This pieing was clearly not part of the show itself... so what is this business about "the camera pans to Marie" to catch her in a bit of banter with her brother that ends with her getting pied? Also, why is Donny using a lame gagline that comes straight off the Donny & Marie show, which had been cancelled for four years at this point? (I was surprised to learn that the D&M show only lasted two seasons, 1976-77 and 1977-78.)

Yeah, I watched this show when I was 8-10 years old. I remember hearing the 'Star Wars Disco Album' for the first time on that show. An ad, I believe.
Yes, the 70s sucked.
I remember seeing the 'giant pie' scene while we were vacationing at Wrightsville Beach.
There was another scene where Marie takes what look like a messy, somewhat undone pancake to the face. I found it on youtube, but I didn't bring it here because, as I remembered, the scene freezes before they show anything.

I don't remember the part about the camera "panning to Marie" in the article I referred to. So I don't know if it was a different description (though most of it sounds familiar) in TV Guide, or I just don't remember that part. However, maybe that's why I expected to see it in the episode! So, maybe it was planned, but got edited out. I don't remember if Marie was playing herself (or a character named Marie), otherwise it would have been odd for Donny to call her "Marie" and refer to (like you said), a lame gagline.
Another mainstream deal where something is advertised (or written about in a preview) and wasn't actually in the program! I guess we'll never know!
Thanks, Jedi! Like you said, not much to see, but as she wipes the pancake down her face, you can see that it left some "uncooked batter" mess. We've had to use our imaginations for years, so I enjoyed it!
And I rather enjoyed the actions matched to the music.

I mean, I think of most of you as Simpsons characters, 1920s silent-movie actresses, or Walton Goggins in drag. And Barbara takes a pie better than all of you combined.
Norman, did you catch that crack about 1920s silent-movie actresses? I think you might need to take out a restraining order too!
Yes, indeed! I resemble that remark!
Silent movie actresses, huh? The early 20th century "Queen of Slapstick"? The thrower of the first pie recorded on film? (according to legend)
