I was just about to place an order for methyl cellulose and found out it was discontinued on chemistrystore.com and replaced with hydroxyethylcellulose. Does anyone have experience with hydroxyethylcellulose? I am wondering how it compares for slime making purposes.
A lot of it is down to the grade of HEC or Methyl. We've had quite a few different grades over the years. Natrosol is a hydroxy ethyl cellulose (HEC) and again there are quite a few different grades of natrosol. We've had around 7 or 8 different Methyl Cellulose grades, usually Methocel , with each providing a different consistency. We've also used Carboxy Ethyl Cellulose (CMC) which is pretty good but again comes in different grades with different results. The HEC should be fine for you but it may be worth buying a small amount to try first.
Its interesting this came up as we were talking about all the different grades of "gunge" at the Bristol Splunch and somebody did ask me to put together a Gunge Connoisseur pack to try some different grades !
For those in the UK I do have some Methylcellulose and also some Carboxy Methyl Cellulose that we are selling at £13.99 for just under a kg (950g) to keep postage down. Its what we're going to fill the dunk tank with next week, not easy to mix but great results. You need to mix the gunge into a paste with a small amount of water then dilute down with more water. If you want to try some its on our ebay store under Methyl cellulose. If you want the Carboxy cellulose just send a message asking for that.
Thanks for the info guys! I'm glad to hear it's similar but easier to mix since I went ahead and ordered it without waiting for replies (I wanted to make sure I had some type of slime for my next shoot).
I like what I have ordered from this company so far so hopefully the quality will be similar to their other products.
