- Some fussy person wipes it all off immediately - Pie is made from something that doesn't stick to face - Further to 2, tiny amount of the pie on the plate goes on face and the rest isn't used for a second go or put on head or something - Over-enthusisatic pie-er rubs pie in too much and ends up removing most of it
I can sorta understand holding back in amateur dramatic productions where costumes need to be re-used for multiple shows and cleaning is an extra chore for someone, or they don't want mess over the floor for the rest of the show.
The title of the post says it all. This lovely little niche fetish we get to enjoy is really anything but "mainstream". It's truthfully unreasonable to expect that "Hollywood" (or "Bollywood", etc.) would be on the same level as the likes of even Noise, Rich or Pie-Zone. If I'm being honest with myself, I wouldn't want Hollywood to be on that level anyway.
I really like the way the 2nd and 3rd one panned out. It was mainstream scenes that made me interested in this in younger days, and sometimes when WAM producers supposedly hit it "just right" for some people, there's no suspense or interest as to how it is going to work out. If you're interested in "believing" that it's the result of an actual food fight instead of a WAM photoshoot, then #3 is extremely accurate.
Sometimes, instead of wishing that mainstream scenes looked more like things made by WAM producers, I wish that things made by WAM producers looked a little more mainstream. But that's because I'm into the "plot" of how it happens, and how a random food fight wouldn't really have "total pie coverage" on the first hit. Sometimes, it's exciting not to know that you're going to get everything you want. And you're (probably) not paying for those mainstream scenes, so they owe us nothing.

That's an interesting point. In real life, if someone got surprised by having a bucket of gunge poured over them, they wouldn't look up and tilt their head to get maximum coverage - they'd look down and/or dodge out of the way.
However, if someone shouts "Hey, Bob!" then Bob looks up and gets a pie thrown at them (with no time to flinch), it's possible that the thrower could get lucky with good coverage. Unlikely, but I'm willing to suspend my disbelief a bit. I think that's similar to the way that if actors fumble their lines then they do a re-take, rather than the character needing a couple of attempts to get the sentence out.
