"How mainstream is Wam?"
So I came across this article today, it's from October and it talks about wam, or more specifically slime, being used in fashion shows. It then explores the fetish, and adds the question we've all probably asked ourselves at some point; how common is this fetish?
I've always thought of wam (which is such a general term anyway) as an oddity, a curiosity, not something the average person would be in to. But is that because they've never tried it? Or never heard of it? My wam fetishis, like most peoples, can be quite substance and scenario specific. Most food doesn't do it for me, beans, peas, gravy... savoury mess. It's like any other fetish, sometimes it's considered taboo while other times it makes its way into the mainstream. I think Nickelodeon has made getting slimed more acceptable in the mainstream esp when celebs are getting in on the action. Ellen's talk show made it more palatable for certain audiences too. It's always been a part of comedy and will always be, but as far as it being widely acceptable as a fetish it's hard to say.

"How common is this fetish? How mainstream is wam?": For most, what they see is nothing more than a tv-trope used for entertainment. It used to make music videos more arty or advertisements edgy. It is used by a runway fashion show to create a unique show just once and never to be repeated or copied. I think that when most people view it on mainstream media, they are not aware that what they are seeing is a fetish for other people (or a kink, pleasure, or whatever brings us here).

"How much popular should it become?": It does not even show up in most top kink/fetish lists. It should at least be popular enough to make most top-25 kink/fetish lists.
I read about other kinks and fetishes that are out there and they do not appeal to me. Some are repulsive to me. I wonder why they exist, and in the same way I think someone wonders why wam exists because it is repulsive to them. I feel like wam is a "better" fetish compared to some other ones on these lists, and it should be more popular compared to some other fetishes that make these top-25 lists.

Now, there is an abundance of shows, movies, youtube, tiktoks, internet, and other forms of media. There is an abundance of other adult content on adult entertainment sites. Exposure to the concept either visually or physically seems limited. Google trends show decreasing popularity.

In TV there has been a noticeable decline of messy action. There's still some out there but I guess health & safety got involved and the whole thing probably isn't worth the effort for some production companies.

MessMaster has kindly appointed me the role of WAM Ambassador because of my continued interactions with mainstream media. The content I produce tends to be more digestible to the not-so-fetish-oriented eye it would seem. There is most certainly an increasing mainstream awareness of the kink. How mainstream SHOULD it become? That's an interesting question. Everybody likes to be part of something special. Does it become less special when everybody knows about it? I've experienced this a bit with music. I absolutely LOVE UK Hardcore. It's always been a niche genre here in the USA. This being the case, it was somewhat affordable to book some of the top talent in the genre for shows I throw. Over the last several years, artists like Gammer and Darren Styles have found MAJOR exposure at large USA festivals. This has resulted in them getting significantly higher booking fees. While I love seeing my favorite artists getting higher salaries, the selfish side of me hates that I can no longer afford to book them to perform at the shows I host. If there's suddenly a huge mainstream adoption of this fetish, maybe that'll allow your favorite producers and models to really step up their game and produce better content for you!

The prep and clean up is such a valid point. Most people these days are lazy as hell, and a proper messy session needs a ton of work. Its a big commitment, if you do it right... and possibly a reason more people don't try it. How many regular people fall asleep straight after sex? Not an option after a big wam session, unless you like stains and destroyed property!
Definitely requires a commitment, for me, I need a full day to do it properly, or at least 6 or 8 hrs. That's a fair bit different to slapping on a pair of handcuffs or a latex catsuit.
Probably some people would never try it, as its too much work.
As a side note... im a clean freak. Always cleaning my house, hate it being messy. I genuinely think that's linked to my fetish. But that's another topic for another day.

I often question how many wammers are actually clean freaks. I am as well so it is interesting to think deep into why clean freaks are into getting messy to offset that clean part in their mind. Or even deeper thought I have pondered, is the cleanup actually what gives us enjoyment......

Genuinely though I think the two things are linked. It makes sense to me.
But anyway, getting off topic here. Part of my reason for this thread, besides the article, was my wife's shocked reaction to me revealing my fetish to her. She looked at me like I was a serial killer. She just doesn't get it... and then I got to thinking, how rare is this? Then the article came up, and I thought... maybe not so rare, maybe people just act like it's taboo for fear of humiliation or judgement.

Indeed. There are certainly some mainstream WAM out there but they also have to walk the fine line between slapstick and actually catering to a fetish crowd. I was trying to convey that to me at least there is something ironically comical about a person who likes things clean so much that they will go as far as to make a mess just for the satisfaction of cleaning it. I wouldn't even call it laziness, just not wanting to have to do a load of drudgery. Those of us with actual proper gunge dungeons that can be hosed down and swept out have a huge advantage but even here there's a bunch of work involved after a messy scene, which is why most of the time when Lady Jasmine and I play together we just stick to wetlook in the dungeon pool, perhaps with some golden syrup poured into each other's clothes first. A couple of hours fully dresssed in the warm water together, then clean up is just pull the pool air plugs and sit on the collapsing edge with the flood of water flowing past as it empties, and leave to dry while we head back upstairs.
If on the other hand we do full messy, even with the hose and facilities it's a good half hour minimum, often longer, before can retire, esp if custard has been used.

I've always hated getting my hands messy. Back when I was younger and would cycle down the coast to play in the mud, I'd dress in shorts, t-shirt, long-sleeve check work shirt, denim overalls, wellies, and black rubber gauntlets with the shirt sleeves tucked in. While not a clean freak, I am definitely someone who likes to keep their house AND yard clean. Everything has it's place. I hate clutter in the house and in the yard. When it comes to WAM, I much prefer the clean-up to the prep. I think it's the feeling of 'we just got done with a shoot and have accomplished something.'

The only grain of salt suggestion I have is that instead of a full day huge session that has a lot of prep and cleanup work, maybe try a small session.

Yeah the work involved is one good reason why some people never try it. I could create a list of reasons:
* Too much work to prepare
* Too much work to clean up
* Cost of substances
* Cold substances
* Undesirable substances
* Unwilling to be humiliated
* Unwilling to humiliate someone else
* Unwilling to get mess on specific body parts
* No desire for the sensation
* Repulsion to get messy
* Lack of knowledge or understanding
I think wam being more popular and mainstream mostly help with the last point. Maybe it would make it easier to empathize if there was more knowledge and awareness. It is also important to have empathy and understand why someone is unwilling to try.
