I've seen some videos where the producer will throw pies at the model from off-camera, and other videos where models throw pies at each other. (Realistically, these need to be "real" pies, because shaving foam is too light and the pie turns into a frisbee.)

Does anyone have a personal best for how far back they can stand, while still being vaguely accurate?

See now I'm wondering if it's possible to design some kind of range-boosting contraption for pie throwing.

3-5? Give it take I think? At least w some decent accuracy? But other side of throwing, I used pie filling w some water to loosen it up n w cool whip / cake icing mix n she says a few made her face go numb from impact, just a warning... I did throw them as hard as I could so luckily she didn't get a concussion or had I missed and the tin maybe coulda cut her face

Standing 6-8 feet away - the pie leaving the hand about 5 feet away. The pies have to be 'real' with a solid or cracker crust and heavy content like double cream.

Any further away (with a crust) and the force needed behind them would be incredibly painful for the recipient.

Personally, I'm not very good at this! I have to be close range for the pie splat/impact to look good.

Back in the day when I made videos for my own amusement, I'd say I was roughly six feet from the model, and I'd normally launch from about 4 feet, give or take. I was consistently accurate at that range. I used baked pie crusts filled with well thawed cool whip. Never had a complaint about it hurting anyone, and I'd say I pied about 20 ladies over the years I was active.

I have only had pies thrown at me a couple of times and they smart. I certainly didnt miss when i have thrown pies at a guys face.

I reckon there is a science to all of this, too heavy and it hurts the recipient, too light and it becomes tricky to throw. Plus of course the ingredients needs to stick and completely cover the face and features, if it just slides off, whats the point? No humiliation. I find the smell of fresh cream lingers for ages - i was wondering if shaving foam (who wants to eat it anyway?) in a pie crust then a thickish layer of marshmallow fluff for stickiness. You could add custard underneath or colour the shaving foam too to make it 'look' more edible.

Now i am longing to test this out...

By the way, i am in the UK, you can't buy American style cream pies here - we have to compromise...

Controversial opinion: I've never bothered to test my "range" with pie throwing. I'm going for accuracy, not distance. That means that you'll typically see me step into the frame of the medium angle shot as I'm throwing the pie.

The trade-off, of course, is that I don't "miss" anymore. The closest I come is occasionally going too high, where the lower part of the mouth/chin isn't covered. But I'd say 90% of my thrown pies these days are direct hits, which is the advantage of firing from close range.

And as the below GIF shows, it's very simple to cut to the closeup angle and have the pie fly "out of nowhere" to nail the lovely model.

What if instead of a pie you threw something like a chocolate snowball? By this I mean -- you take a round nerf ball and soak it in chocolate syrup. Or slather it with peanut butter. A group of girls dressed in white throwing at each other would be fun to watch.
