Poll is targeted at wammers who have indulged in the act of getting messy themselves, pro, amateur, private, whatever. Out of plain curiosity! I wanna know which broooooad category people like to indulge in *themselves*, as opposed to watching others.

On a serious note, I prefer lubish things like...well...lube, gunge, oil the best. Followed by pudding/custard. It's really more about texture than if I can eat it too.

You've missed the best substance of all - mud!

Getting messy with slime or with custard is great, but there really is nothing quite like playing in mud for both how it feels and how it looks as it coats your clothes. Mud glorious mud!

Voted for food, but I'd have to add a 'second preference' for non-food household items like paint, paste, glue and so on.

For me, a key part of the 'getting messy' is in the very use of these items - substances that are intended for something else. I struggle to get too excited about natrosol or similar - there just isn't the fun (or indeed anything like the messiness ) in using gunge and slime. For me, these don't really have the desired consistency for mess, nor the enjoyment.

I find a bucket of cake batter more satisfying than a bucket of slime, even if both are green (or any other colour you choose to pick ). Slime is slime is slime - there's no variation - whereas when you're playing with a variety of substances (flour, water, custard, syrup, oil, porridge, eggs, etc), the mess 'evolves' and transforms. Equally using household items you get a wider range of substances and sensations.

I also think there needs to be a challenge involved in getting clean again. It's why I love (and will always welcome) the use of flour

Thick gameshow style brightly coloured natrasol for me. Food wise I'm an 'anything but savoury' kinda guy. I have been ginger with really awful stinky foody stuff and gone with it...but really isn't for me!
(Anyone out there chuckling at me gagging over horrible sloppings I've had in the past...you know who you are!!!)

Yes - agreed! There's nothing quite like fine silky sloppy mud. The weight of it and the way it moves is so different to everything else that's on the list. The other great thing about it is that you're not limited to a few cartons or a bucket of it - in the right location, it's effectively unlimited so you can go a lot more wild with it (and no need to sheet up an area and clean it down afterwards!)

For indoor work, another one you've missed off the list is modelling clay. All the same properties as above, though you do have to do the mixing prep and sheeting off etc. Wonderful for coverage, splatter, silkiness and feel, especially when clothes filling. (Multiple pairs of tights being filled between the layers is amazing!)

Totally agree and it is the cheapest of the lot. Nothing better than seeing white or light coloured clothes get plastered in mud.

With a few very select exceptions (seafood is one for sure) if you can eat it, you can pour it over me

As much as I enjoy a buckets worth of gunge, food has got to be my favourite. The more lumpy the better. Love a play around at the end of a session when the gunge and food has mixed, best of both worlds.

I dunno, nyotaimori (eating sushi off a naked woman) is legitimately an experience I have always wanted. It's SUPER expensive though.

Ok, understood, but I imagine most people who would play in mud would count it as a category of its own, not lumped in with things like paint. I'd not expect models who've agree to mud to automatcally also agree to paint, for example.

I wanted to keep the survey broad. I initially started with just "food" and "not food" as options just to see what the high level preference was. TBH I should have done that, didn't mean to imply I was covering all the individual niches.
