When you watch Ellen's shows, she does seem to take a delight in soaking/messing audience members. Maybe this impression is just my imagination. But I think that she may be a secret wammer. Hope so. Peter
I understand that for insurance purposes they need goggles. What I don't understand is why don't they just use the swimmer goggles that protect the eyes. The goggles they choose covers everything except the mouth.

My thoughts exactly!
Based on the outcry against her show and all, it may be more masochism and less wamming pleasure she gets out of it.
Also, not a big fan of goggles, but better than raincoat/showercaps.
I'm not sure if it's happened much, or at all, in recent years, but celebrities used to get messy and put in the dunk tank on her show a fair amount. (It seems like in the last few years she mostly has the celebrities help her mess up audience members.)
Anyway, my point is that, for as much mess as she's had on her show over the years, I've never once seen Ellen get messy or dunked herself. (Not saying it's never happened, but if it has, I think it's very rare at best.) I am honestly not interested in seeing her get messy from a wammer's perspective, but just from the standpoint of being a good sport about things, I think this is another way in which she looks bad as a hostess, i.e. she'll gleefully do to others what she'll never let happen to herself.
My question is- do they sign a waiver or plant people in the audience beforehand that will get messy? Like taking a pie in the face is one thing you can wipe that off, but the lady who gets milk poured on her- do they take her backstage after to wipe it off or does she just go home soaking wet?
Its a US TV show. They do waivers. And they ask for volunteers before filming starts, with prizes typically the motivation.
Ellen is reported to have a cruel streak. Stories in the last few years came out about how she was cruel to staffers, in addition to "pranking" guests to the extent more and more refused to do the show. (You can even see it in the backstage clips in her interview by David Letterman on his Netflix show.) https://www.thethings.com/15-not-so-sweet-facts-about-ellen-degeneres/
Viewed in that lens the games may have been the writers way of finding a TV-friendly way to redirect her misanthropy.
IMHO, if she has a kink, it's more likely humiliation (as a top) rather than WAM.
