That's a great first "WAM memory" to have, Piedave!

I still remember first seeing a VERY brief--yet tantalizing--clip of this classic pieing on one of those ABC Network Promo Spots featuring of smorgasbord of comedy series clips way back in 1985. The spot showed Cybill Shepherd for a split second before the pie in the face and for a split second after getting plastered, and--aside from the incredible quality of the pie hit--the sexy french maid's outfit AND the fact that Cybill was absolutely gorgeous REALLY made this one of those "too-good-to-be-true" mainstream WAM moments that we oldsters remember so fondly...the best since the Mandrell sisters, I thought, which was a VERY high bar.

I was able to determine fairly quickly that this was a clip from that new "Moonlighting" show that I hadn't yet seen, and that the victim was Cybill Shepherd, BUT it took at least another year of diligent TV guide surfing and waiting before I was finally able to capture the scene on my then-new VCR during the summer reruns. Of course, finally capturing it was well worth the trouble, and this is still one of the all-time classics in my book.

And when Shepherd published her "Cybill Disobedience" autobiography a number of years later, I immediately scanned the pages (no index, damn it) until I found a mention of this episode--and was floored when I read (as someone recently mentioned on the "One of Us?" thread) that Cybill recounted that she VERY actively and enthusiastically LOBBIED to get creamed at the end of the scene, then referred to the pieing as "refreshing" and a career highlight!

thanks for posting and for posting the better quality version. Indeed an alltime classic. My only gripe is poor aim/camerawork on the other pie-worthy women in the scene. But that's like complaining not enough girls took hits of Chega Mais.

Cybil started out as a model (for you youngsters ) and was a super-model before the term was really invented. She was known in those days as kind of an "ice queen".

When this episode came up on "Moonlighting", I remember reading that she thought that would be a great way to put that image to bed, by getting a pie in the face.

I think that's one reason (besides her being gorgeous, and the [PG-rated] French Maid's uniform ) that so many of us who saw this originally thought it was amazing; because of her original image! :lovestruck:

Of course, Kathleen Turner was an ice queen too, so it's natural that they'd end up being the victims of old-fashioned messy gags. That's why I think it's silly whenever someone names them as likely wammers on the basis of their multiple messy scenes.

That said, Cybill's autobiography certainly makes it sound like a wammer boyfriend would've had no trouble "turning" her. Always encouraging when a hottie makes that clear!

If I remember she also got paint dumped on her in one of the moonlighting episodes.

She got a lot of things during "Moonlighting". She also got wet at least twice. The opening sequence of the 1st episode has her getting caught in the rain and going into Bruce Willis' office all disheveled. And then there was an episode where (iirc) "something" ( a washing machine, I think) burst or flooded over and she was slipping around and got all wet, and slid across the floor, ending up with her skirt around her thighs and legs spread at Bruce's feet.

Besides being a great show, it was a pretty decent show for a wammer to watch!

She did several messy slapstick-y bits on both Moonlighting and the show that was just called Cybil. She's probably not be a wammer, but she seems to love getting messy! In her memoir, when she's talking about being the butt of various messy stunts on the Cybil show in the 90s (well after Moonlighting) she writes, "You know me -- always begging for a pie in the kisser!"

Tongue remembers right -- she got green paint dumped on her head in one episode of Moonlighting, causing her to sputter, "Why am I always the one who gets messed up?" Right after she says that, more green paint came splashing down, this time on Bruce Willis, and I think Cybill then mutters a "thank you" to the slapstick gods. There was another thing on Moonlighting where she ended up in a bunch of soapy water, but my memory is dim on the details there.

I know there were at least two messy scenes on the Cybil show, and I think there were three, but I'm kind of fuzzy on the details here. In one she's at some ceremony where she's repeatedly passing out face-first into a bowl of food. (Very poor mess by wam standards.) In another she and Morgan Fairchild end up in a food fight at Morgan's wedding, with Morgan upending a bowl of guacamole on top of Cybil's head, and Cybil then throwing the bowl off in a very Three Stoogesque manner. But Morgan definitely gets the worst of this one, falling backwards into a shallow fountain pool and then being pied by Cybil.

Yes, I am not familiar with a better food fight scene between two hot, well dressed women than the classic Cybill Shepard/Morgan Fairchild food fight. Would love to see behind the scenes clips from that one where Morgan goes briefly wet in a wedding dress before taking an awesome pie from Cybill. If you watch closely, Morgan was laughing at the very end. They were having fun with it no doubt.

I do remember that Cybil/Morgan tit-for-tat fight being pretty nice, but the irony is that the best pie-in-the-face in the whole sequence actually goes to... An old dude.

The Moonlight scene was epic, though. The previews just showed the pie flying in her face but no aftermath, and especially with mainstream shows... Who knew when or how they'd cut it?

But yes, good scenes were far more valuable back then. You could probably count the number of solid mainstream clips in a year on one hand, and so when a great one came along, well... To put it into Chega Mais terms, back then folks were perfectly willing to watch 10 guys get obliterated with pies as long as one attractive female got hers too. (*cough* The Great Race *cough*)

Which, of course, is similar to what happened with the pie. Cybil got it, and a minute later, Bruce got one, too.

Yep! THAT was a very good food fight! Morgan looked fabulous all wet and pied! And Cybil, as usual, looked wonderful all messy!
