I wish I could find cartons of custard somewhere in the US, like videos shown from the UK. I understand pudding is basically the closest alternative, but only can find snack packs or bulk tubs of it, in which aren't cheap. Anybody know what is the best thing to use in place of custard?
Can you buy it in powdered form ? I buy catering custard powder. You could use natrasol coloured with yellow and white paint to get the pale yellow colour ?
if you're looking for something already made in a carton, probly egg nog might be the closest match? Otherwise, you can always buy pudding mix in powder form and use a carton to mix it with the milk to a desired consistency.
You can get it in powdered form in the US most grocery stores; Birds do one, for sure. When I tried using this I had very mixed results and it was nowhere near as good as the ready made cartons, which I really miss, from living in the UK.
I think it's hard to imagine for US folks, but when the UK can buy it ready made by the 500g pourable carton, it really is made (I like to think, anyway) with wammers in mind (I know, not as recyclable as cans, but hey, less chance to cut yourself on sharp can lids when you're playing!)
If your buying the powdered form look for 'Instant' which you just add boiling water to of course prepare the day before. If you buy birds custard powder you have to cook it on the hob with milk to thicken it.
Never realised we were so lucky in the uk ! Super markets do their own brands too which is even cheaper!
I feel your pain. It's like we can't get Coolwhip anywhere in the UK. And now nowhere seems to sell those lovely and inexpensive Coppenrath and Wiese German cream tortes any more. Damn they were good for getting messy with!!
Do you have a GFS location nearby? No membership required and foodservice-size cans of everything, just sayin'. Or check out the family-sized/restaurant/foodservice department of your local supermarket; Gehl's makes a pudding/custard in #10 cans! (Disclaimer: never bought it, but if I needed a mass quantity of pudding I'd totally go with them first.)
Chances are you can order a case or more of an item if you call your local grocer; I work for one and we get regular orders like this all the time with no questions asked.
