I'm really not sure, but I can tell you this: if you move Cool Whip straight from the freezer to the fridge, it can take a couple days to fully thaw out, which is almost always a bad thing. If you have frozen CW and haven't got that much time to spare, leave it out for at least several hours (3-4 is usually best) before putting it in the fridge.
Yes, they do. Most of the pies I used in my early videos were a mixture of Kool Whip and pudding (as the filling) with some plain KW as topping.
AS for thawing out the Kool Whip: just have a good size cooler and put the containers in that over night...then take then out about an hour before using...should be perfect by then.

I had some success using room temperature Cool Whip in the first Julianne shoot. Andreana's shoot as well. I prepared the pies on plastic plates while still cool, and let them sit out overnight. Interestingly, the pies held their mountainous shapes and peaks, but really exploded upon contact. I also used more forceful pie hits to encourage extra sticking. Like I was really smacking those things good.
I tried whipped cream mixed with frosting for Shaquana's shoot, served cool, but was somewhat disappointed with the lack of stickiness. The same for Tara's "Just Desserts" scene. But the takeaway for me was more about the force of the pie hits...I'll have to try again with the CW+frosting approach.
The generic Cool Whip I use has no diary in it anymore. You can take it out of the fridge 12 hours in advance or more and it won't melt. It will get a nice creamy texture tho. And it sticks quite well. One of several reasons I'm using more and more CW lately.
The following are all pure CW hits. The 3rd and 7th pics (tin-free crust) is a secret recipe of CW mixed with other stuff... A bit more work but it sticks nearly as well as shaving cream but doesn't piss off the anti-SC crowd! (And shockingly, neither the CW crowd nor the SC crowd has shown any sign of approval. Eh. )

So you are saying that for Julianne's first shoot all you used was room temperature Cool Whip? Nothing else mixed in?
