Has anyone ever used these bake-able pie crusts from Aldi? Are they any good for self pieing or a mutual piefight? Pretty cheap, by LA standards, and they also have a cool whip equivalent for under a dollar. Not bad for some in home pie fun.
Short answer yes; long answer, depends on what you are going for and how particular you are. We have used them multiple times. Currently they are $2.50 for a 2 pack in our neck of the woods. The whipped topping is around $0.99, but it takes 2 to really fill up the crust. We prefer the large containers of Walmart Great Value whipped topping ($2.07 currently) which is equivalent to 2 of the smaller Aldi containers. Obviously there is prep time involved here since you have to bake these vs. the ready-to-use graham crackers crusts. We usually bake ours the night before we plan to use them. We also intentionally overcook ours so they are more brittle.
On the positive side, the price is good, the pie tins do not have a sharp metal lip (like is found on most graham crusts) and can be reused if desired, and they look the most like real bakery pies. On the negative side, there is more prep work involved since you have to bake them before using.
Now this last part is pure personal preference. The baked crusts tend to hold together and fall off the face in large chunks. You can mitigate this some by overcooking them, but in our experience we never get a huge amount of crust sticking to the face like we do with the graham crackers style crusts which tend to break apart into small pieces on impact. That is what I meant by it depends on what you are going for and how particular you are. I'll put some sample pics below of our results.
And on a side note, we save the tins from these pies and transfer the graham cracker crusts over to them when we use that kind. Makes them a lot safer, especially when throwing them Hope that helps and have fun!

2 After thoughts: I believe the Aldi pie crusts are a seasonal item so you may want to stock up when you see them. And if you have a Dollar Tree store in your area, they sell the graham cracker style pie crusts for $1.25.
