Hey everyone!! Plan on getting covered in custard this weekend! Any tips or instructions on how to mix custard powder? I'm use to mixing cake batter with water a lot. Can I just mix until I get the right consistency like I do with cake batter? Thanks in advance for the help!
Custard powder is a pain! It needs to be made to instructions to work. I once confused it for instant custard, just added hot water and ended up with yellow water with lumps that I couldn't wisk out. You can get 3kg bags of instant custard online but price of those has risen to the point that just going for ready mix is probably easier (as already suggested). Last time I checked 1kg cartons from Sainsbury's (assuming you're in UK) were best value at 1.30 a shot xx
Unless you actually have a fetish for mixing things, another vote for just buy the ready to serve version, you'll save hours of hassle.
Note it comes in three main varieties:
Ambriosia. Very thick and creamy, to the point it's actually hard to pour. Ideal if you plan to cut the whole top of the carton open and then scoop and smear it by hand, but best avoided if you want to pour it.
Supermarket own-brand (not "value"). More pourable than Ambrosia, comes in 2kg cartons from Tesco but only 1kg from Asda. Ideal for pouring over people.
Supermarket value brand (e.g. "T.E.Stockwell & Co" at Tesco). Only comes in tins. Thinner than supermarket own-brand and much thinner than Ambrosia. Ideal for clothes filling especially if you want lots of drips and leaks.
I agree with the posts above custard powder can be a nightmare to get right, especially if you are make a big amount.
I've had mixed results with yellow lumpy water, to so thick you could sculp a statue with it.
Plus the amount of time needed for prep (not taking in the time after for clean up), it takes away from the whole experience.
So I'd plump for ready made. Good advice from DM, you can also get it from the cheaper supermarkets (Aldi and Lidi), but they only have smaller (500g) cartons. But it does work out cheaper than Tesco etc (slightly), just means more cartons to open.
Try putting an unopened carton of custard in the back of your knickers (with tights on) and then pull up your pants or re-position your skirt then sit down hard on a hard surface. The feeling you get when the custard squirts out is unbelievable (or so someone told me )
