Got a bit of a strange question. If anyone has ever sploshed with ice cream, how long do you have to leave it to partially melt?
Every time I've tried getting it ready, it's either been solid, or separated into oil and water, and neither are what I'm looking for. I've seen some great scenes where it's partially melted so it's a nice and thick substance, but does anyone have any tips on how to get it like that?
I've attached some photos from wam shorts who have produced some of the best ice cream content ever, as far as I know.
If left to defrost naturally it usually becomes a thick, creamy (and the cheaper ones, foamy) mixture as pictured. If it separates bung it in a stand mixer or whisk it up with an electric hand mixer to restore its state of 'emulsion'

What Richard said, and also I find the cheaper ice creams sadly tend to separate more and be crap to work with.
Lecithin is what emusifies things and is sold as a powder and found in egg yolks, maybe try re-whisking with some lecithin powder and a little extra oil (if using cheap ice cream)

Thanks, do you know roughly how long it takes to reach that state please?
If you're waiting for it to defrost then probably a day longer than you've got
Seriously. A few days. All these things become part of the planning process for a shoot where there is a deadline or a short window for the actual activity and up to a week getting the wheels moving on stuff like this.
Good tip, Candy. Lecithin can be ordered online if you can't get it in a supermarket (as where I live I usually can't)

for one of the 2kg big tubs, I'd say about 4 hours at room temp - but that is a pure guess, I've not used it for a long time. Test it out, buy a few and leave them out for different times, check them and give a whisk if it looks to be separating. Then make a mental note of your findings. Then tip the experiments all over yourself, naturally

Perfect, thanks. Planning something a few weeks off so will do some experiments in the coming days. Had never thought about whisking it to get it back together!
Pretty much what everyone else has said, usually leave overnight and then stir with a spoon to deal with separation. You can drain off some of the separated liquid as well. Usually comes out a bit thinner than I'd like, but in my experience, chocolate seems to work best!
I also left mine out for something like 6 to 10 hours (don't remember -- it was a long time ago). When I found that the middle was still a little frozen, I simply put it in the microwave for a minute, checked it and found it still a little frozen, put it in again, etc. until it was the perfect consistency.
Wait...wait...wait... you have this glorious cold ice cream and your going to let it warm up?
My girlfriend and I have done it cold and had ice cream fights that have been out of this world fun! Of course I have to slap it on her private parts and she on mine with some wild results. As long as it's all in good fun, Id say keep it frosty!!!
A long hot shower is always a fun treat afterwards!
If you look at the pics on my profile you will see the effect of using ice cream as one of the things I got messy with. I was following Candy Custards instructions of what to use. I bought 2 large tubs of the cheapest ice cream from Tesco and left it out overnight to defrost and soften. It felt wonderful sliding down the inside of my dress and into my panties and then at the end made a good contribution to the final mess, I will be using it again.
I've seen clips from the UK where ice cream separates and has quite a bit of water separated from it. Here in Canada, it seems to be a different formula, as it stays mixed and rather thick, even at room temperature. I'm talking about the cheapest Walmart ice-cream in the plastic tubs.
