This has probably been posted before by someone, so apologies for repeating if it has.
Looking through the abundance of WAM pictures out there, I see that there is a mix of coverage
Some show them absolutely covered in multiple food items, pies, gunge etc. Others, are just a simple pie in the face, or even clean but suggesting mess to happen.
So the question is. What's best?
An absolute deluge of mess, or just a little to fire your imagination.

More is better. But more in the wrong hands is a waste, and less in the right hands can still be amazing
A naked girl sitting in a cake isn't A LOT of mess, but my does it get my attention!!
However, while small messes suffice most of the time, my dreams always involve A LOT of mess. Right now my biggest personal WAM fantasy is a bed full of cakes. And lets face it, done right you can almost never have too much mess.
A woman who starts looking like picture two, so we can imagine her messy. Then a session that end like photo one. Totally covered in lots of messy substances.
I suppose the answer to this depends on the purpose of the image in question?
I absolutely love the second one you've posted above, where the lady in the silver ballgown appears completely clean and dry, but is obviously planning something messy involving the pie she's holding.
Personally, I'm hoping she's going to stand up, place the pie on her chair, and very deliberately sit herself down on it, squelching it fully into the seat of her dress, and then enjoying the sensations as the wetness seeps through the fabric to her skin underneath. And then perhaps she'll remain sitting there, looking oh so refined even as she's getting turned on by what she's sitting on, and happily remain smiling and unmoving as another beautifully dressed-up woman slowly and carefully pours an entire bucket of custard into her lap, down the front of her dress, and over both shoulders. After which she'll stand up and return the favour to the other woman, possibly even having her sit in the same seat, with a fresh pie of her own to squelch into before the custard pouring begins.
So from the point of view of "an image that can spark an entire imaginary scene playing out in the viewer's head" then no coverage at all, but a clear indication that mess ia going to happen, can in fact be the best of all.
In terms of images of people actually messy, the answer is very much "it depends". Lots of people seem to really go for scenes or pics where someone's been pied in the face, but is otherwise completely clean. I'm the opposite. I prefer heads and faces left clean while the rest of the recipient, and especially their lower half, is drenched in mess. And generally I want to know they are messy all over, front and back. A woman wearing jeans and a tucked-in shirt, sitting in a mudbath, legs submerged, trunk of jeans covered in mud but visible, shirt clean from the waist up and head and face still pristine, would be an awesome image in my book.
I also like mid-scene shots from scenes involving two or more people, where each person is totally ignoring the mess that's alrteady been applied to themselves, but is focusing on doing something very messy to another person's outfit.
I choose a lot, of course, broadly. Just because (if you're going to capture it for viewing and enjoyment) go as far as possible. Over the top!
The transformation. The turn-on is in viewing the messy subject in the full knowledge of the extent of that transformation.
So, full coverage, everywhere - and some more, fully clothed and then, perhaps all over again, disrobed!
But the simple details in the narrative are important. The girlfriend, hair done, wearing her own, nice clothes and shoes etc.
It's cruel, it's mean. No way to treat a lady. But she's laughing joyously and with some amount of incredulity under a Jackson Pollock of oatmeal, treacle paint and spaghetti.
It's not a tease, it's serious, big, decadent and messy!
Some interesting replies to this. I see the general feel is that the more, the better. Getting absolutely covered from head to toe seems what the majority want. However, it was fascinating to read DungeoMasterOne replied with regards to seeing a clean pic with an inclination to mess and letting your own imagination go wild. I agree that sometimes having a sploshdream can be awesome.
In saying that a completely covered babe in a multitude of slop can be a real turn on as well.
Love both, but I prefer the second one, the anticipation is very important to me, for me the situation leading to the pie in the face, is even more exciting than just taking a pie to the face
Anticipation. Of course, very important. And what if? (Do you undress a woman with your eyes, or do you imagine WAMming her).
Plus, in the right situation - one pie, or a condiment squirted down a cleavage can be everything!
I'm not a fan of the 'blob' - it's better for even a heavy mess to hug, follow and accentuate the feminine form rather than obscure it.
And 'WAM face' the smile (or look of indignant outrage) radiating through the mess.
There's a thing I've noticed that a lot of pie fans appear to share (but not me):
where the pie is pushed carefully, firmly and neatly covers and obscures the centre of the model's face (and goes nowhere else). The pie tin is removed leaving the filling perfectly formed. The model is encouraged to keep this position for as long as possible before disturbing it.
