Spring SkiingStory by Blaze68Posted 4/1/19 386 views
We hit the slopes once a week all winter long, even in the worst of the weather, and the end of the season was always a treat, particularly for us. No doubt, if we were dressed for the slopes, we figured out some way to get wet, one way or another, before the day was through, but spring is an absolute invitation! Once we figured it out, we rarely missed a final weekend or a party at our favorite slopes, particularly if it involved "pond skimming" or any of the other crazy stuff these places are famous for.
We'd dress to look "normal" and act reluctant to get wet, even though we knew why we were there. Once the beer was flowing and the crowd loosened up, the fun would start. Sometimes we'd start out watching nearby and getting splashed as the racers hit the ponds, and eventually concede to the challenges and put our skis on and go for it. No matter what, even if we made it across, we'd get wet, and that was all it took.
It usually went down one of two ways - either we did our thing on skis and got wet with the rest of the players, or somebody got pushed in. Occasionally, she'd just jump in if that was what the crowd was into. It was funny too, because we met more than a few people who were there who were actually planning to get wet!
The routine was almost always the same - dress for the slopes with a plan for getting wet afterwards and see what happens. Once the party started, have a few beers and join the crowd, cheer everyone on, and join in the fun! On many of the warmer days, off came the ski clothes for a few runs down the slopes - nothing but jeans and sweaters, and no stripping down before we tried skimming.
Suzy began to treat every trip like an event - deciding what clothes we would wear, if we'd stay over, if there was a pool or a hot tub available, and how we'd get into the water. With the enthusiasm of a child with a new toy, she'd scan the papers and the schedules to pick out a venue, and by Thursday, her enthusiasm was overflowing.
There were so many memorable weekends, and so many people we met that had no problem soaking their clothes, although I doubt that many of them were truly hard core wetlookers. I'd guess that most were opportunists and joined the crowd after a couple drinks, although we did meet one couple that we ran into at more than one place, and it happened for 3 seasons in a row.
