Sarah got wet in the rain.Story by emoneyPosted 6/22/24 150 views
It had been a scorching summer day, the kind where the air shimmered with heat, and every breath felt like inhaling fire. Seeking relief, I headed to the local pool, desperate for the cool embrace of the water. As I stepped through the gate, I spotted Sarah, the lifeguard, sitting in her high chair, lazily twirling her whistle around her finger. She was dressed in a purple ribbed crop top, black booty shorts, baggy white slouch socks, and a pair of black canvas Keds tennis shoes.
The pool was nearly empty, with just a few kids splashing around and an older couple floating leisurely. I was about to jump in when the sky darkened ominously. Within minutes, the first drops of rain began to fall, quickly escalating into a torrential downpour. The sudden change in weather was startling, and I could see the leaves and debris quickly clogging the pool's drains.
Sarah blew her whistle and called everyone out of the pool. "Everyone out! Storm's coming in fast!" she shouted. Reluctantly, we all obeyed, scrambling for our towels and bags.
The rain intensified, and soon it was pounding down so hard that it was difficult to see more than a few feet in front of me. Water began to pool around the deck, and I noticed it was starting to back up around the drains, threatening to flood the pool area and the nearby clubhouse.
Sarah, ever the diligent lifeguard, sprang into action. "I need to clear these drains before the clubhouse gets flooded," she said, more to herself than anyone else. She didn't hesitate, dropping to her knees to start clearing the leaves and debris with her hands.
Despite the driving rain, Sarah worked quickly, her clothes becoming soaked almost instantly. Her purple crop top clung to her like a second skin, and her black booty shorts were soon shiny with water. Her white slouch socks drooped heavily, and her black Keds squelched with every movement.
Unbeknownst to Sarah, her friend had been filming her from the moment she started clearing the drains. The camera captured every detail--the rain cascading down her face, her determined expression, and the way her clothes darkened and clung to her body as they absorbed the water.
"Sarah, you look like a drowned rat!" her friend called out, laughing.
Sarah glanced up, grinning despite the rain pouring down her face. "Yeah, but it's a heatwave. This actually feels pretty good!"
With the drains finally cleared and the immediate danger of flooding averted, Sarah stood up and wiped her hands on her shorts. She was drenched from head to toe, her hair plastered to her head, and her shoes squelching with every step.
"You know what? I think I'll join you in the pool," she said, looking at me. Without waiting for a response, she walked over to the edge and jumped in, fully clothed.
I couldn't help but laugh and followed her lead, diving into the warm water. The contrast between the cool rain and the heated pool was invigorating. Sarah's friend continued filming, capturing our laughter and the sheer joy of the moment.
For a while, we swam and played in the water, enjoying the sensation of being drenched in our clothes. It was a rare, carefree moment that we would remember fondly.
As the rain began to ease, we finally climbed out of the pool, water streaming from our clothes and shoes. Sarah's friend stopped filming, promising to send us the video later.
"That was fun," Sarah said, wringing out her hair. "But next time, let's hope the weather cooperates a bit more."
We all laughed, knowing that despite the unexpected storm, it had turned out to be a perfect summer day at the pool.
