Jake's Journey Part 1

Hey. This is my first story I've properly written. I'm a bit nervous about sharing it with you guys, but I hope you enjoy. This is part 1 of many.
------------
I knew it was going to be one of those days. Not one of those days where everything goes wrong, or one of those days which you quickly want to move on, but it was one of those days where I'm not entirely sure what happened. For some reason I was tied to a post, standing there in a pair of white CK's, slime and muck covering my chest, abs, arms and legs. More was incoming, cold, wet and foul, and yet just a few hours earlier I had been in my place, unaware of the adventures of the afternoon.

Where did it all start? I guess I knew that something was up a few days ago. Drew hadn't said much to me, almost as if he was ignoring me or if I was invisible to him. I had known Drew for a while now. He was my roommate and we had got on well since he had moved into my place. I liked him a lot, and I think he liked me back. I know that he enjoyed my company, and we had spent many an hour binging on some great shows on Netflix. I couldn't think of anything that I had done that would cause the sudden and apparent friction in our lives.

I needed some time away from the place. Sometime away from Drew. It was proving incredibly lonely being home in my place with him in this sort of mood. I picked up the keys from the dresser where I had left, put on my favourite leather jacket and caught a cab into town. I walked aimlessly for hours, in and out of shops, meandering along paths through the parks and by the river. Occasionally a runner would come by and would give the usual greeting of a nod. It had been a while since I had l last run, but I was well known in the community. Normally I would have paid more attention to the runners as they went past, especially if they were slim, muscular runners, the lycra hugging the outlines of their biceps and core. Even better if it was raining, shorts and tees clinging to their bodies more than normal. But on this day, I couldn't even tell you what colour tee they were wearing.

As the afternoon waned, and the sky grew dark with storm clouds, I wandered into a bar, perching myself on a stool.
"Hey mate, why the glum face?"
"Oh reasons." I replied looking up at the face that had just spoken to me. A chiselled jaw, sparkling blue eyes, and bleach blonde hair. The bartender looked to be a similar age to me, around 30, a shade taller, and full of life. I couldn't help but smile at him. "None of them really important, just some issues with my housemate."
"Like that is it? Huh. Not here now is he?"
"No, left him to stew in whatever foul mood he is in. Home has just been unbearable with him like this the last few days."
The barman placed a drink down in front of me.
"But I didn't order.." I began to say.
The barman placed a finger on my lips, as if to hush me. "Its on the house. You look like you need it, and a bit of company to be honest. My shift is just finishing if you want to hang out for a while."

I didn't really want the company, and I didn't want to come across as rude, but there was something strangely alluring about this mysterious bartender that I wanted to learn more about. "Sure" I said.
"My names Mike."
"Jake"

And we sat there in the bar for a couple of hours, talking about random rubbish. Mike was a sporty guy, enjoyed a bit of rugby and swimming. His life sounded great, full of adventures and of things that I always wished I could do but never had the courage to have a go at. He also helped feel at ease, and I realised that for the first time in a long time I was starting to feel happy about everything.

"Just wow"
"You should have been their Jake. Top of the mountain, the view was spectacular. We watched as the birds swooped around on the thermals, the water trickling and then gushing down the ravines. And then, because we could and no one else was around, we stripped, ran around in the buff, and soothed our aching muscles with the snow on the ground. It was bliss, though we regretted it on the way down. I think we raced to the hot tub!"

I had never laughed so hard in my life. I went to get up, buy Mike another drink and thank him for the evening, when I noticed Drew enter the door. I hadn't realised earlier, but now it was obvious, this was Drew's favourite bar. I'd only been here once, on his birthday. It was an odd evening, he and his friends had worn identical outfits, looking like they were some sort of boy band from the 90's. Mike had noticed my sudden change in demeanour.

"Ah, hes here isn't he. Let me guess." He surveyed the room, his t shirt twisting in pleasing ways, showing off his lats. "Brown hair, grunge t-shirt, jeans 2 sizes too small?"
"That's him."
"I've seen him around a bit, keeps with interesting company. I was going to have scoot a bit anyway soon, do you want to go out the backdoor?"
"Err.." I had a moments hesitation. Maybe this was the time to talk to Drew, have it out with him, find out what was going on with him. That was when I saw that the boy band was with him. Another time then. "Please Mike. Don't think I can face him at the moment."
"No problem"

We snuck out of the back exit, avoiding detection by Drew and his crew. Out in the alley, the streetlights were throwing everything into shadow. I went to give Mike a handshake as a mean of thanks when, taking advantage of the seclusion the dark offered, pulled me close and gave me a quick kiss. I stopped for a second, startled, unsure of what to do or what had happened. I hadn't realised that as I was listening to Mike tell his stories he was surveying my body, taking in its curves and features, liking what he saw. Going on instinct I brought my face closer to his and we made out, in the cold and dark alleyway. After a moment we broke apart.

"That was ok, wasn't it?" Asked Mike, a note of uncertainty present in his normal confident self. "I thought you were interested"
"Erm, yeah. It's just that"
"Never kissed a guy before?" I nodded my head in agreement. "That's ok" Mike continued. "Let me know if you want to do more sometime. Borrow your phone for a second?"

I gave Mike my phone, not entirely sure what had just happened, but wanting to trust my instincts. I had been a long time since I had kissed someone, anyone really. Relationships were not something I did, my life generally revolved around work, sleep and more work.
"Call me sometime" Mike said, returning my phone. He gave me a final embrace, took a quick feel of my bum and left, for all I knew never to be seen by me again. I wasn't in to guys, at least that's what I thought, and the kiss was probably due to the amount we had drunk.

Fast forward a few days to yesterday morning. It had finally happened. The confrontation with Drew arrived and it was one hell of an argument. I still liked the guy, would be his friend and there whenever he needed it, and told him so, only to be told to keep my nose out of his business. That's the polite version. Suffice to say that Drew took his stuff and has moved in with his boy band buddies. Part of me is relieved at not having to put up with Drew's mood any longer, but also there's a sense of loss, of a potential good friendship disappearing into the ether. I was alone in my house, not knowing what to do. Out of pure impulse I texted Mike. Almost instantly he replied saying he could be over in 10 minutes and asking my thoughts on custard. If only I had known what that had meant at the time!
