UMD: The Facebook of wam.

You can talk with people from near or far and get to know other wammers. It's also a great way to talk with professionals and see what they are up to. It's a lot like twitter in that way, but i like to think of it as Facebook, because its a great way to talk with people.

But its not the same as making friends.

Like on Facebook, they use the term friend on here to mean people you talk to often or like to talk to, but just like Facebook. It's not an actual friend most of the time. Actual friends are ones you see in real life and really know what is going on in their lives, not just what you see on a website. THey only show part of the picture. You cannot see or know what is really going on, one because the other person is so far away anyway, and two, most (the lucky ones) have lives outside of it.

It's hard not to confuse online friends with real friends when its easier to just say friends, and especially when one doesn't have many real friends to use in comparison. But it is a completely different animal.
Talking with someone online means that you can't see their facial reaction or know the context of their wording: whether they are serious or joking, happy or sad, sarcastic or realistic. You can't tell if you are offending anyone or getting on someones nerves like you can in real life without asking. Many people are friendly, saying its ok, not to worry, or don't be concerned with writing to much or offending anyone, but in the end, you can. It's hard not to get to comfortable.

Anyway, I learned my lesson. I won't try to be actual friends with anyone on here again. Its not something where you confide into someone or expect them to be there when you need them, mostly because they won't. it may be a day, a week, a month, a year, or never before they speak to you next, for reasons one may never know or understand.

I won't say I'm sorry for trying to be friends with people on here. All I can say now is,
I understand.
