"Good morning Saint Joe! I hope you all are having a fine Friday morning!"

Two women, one taller than the other, are standing in the middle of a concrete pier under a clear, sunny sky facing a camera man who idly records with a camera he lugs on his shoulder. The trio shuffle closer together as a wave gently slaps against the sides of the pier around them, dappling water along the edges.

"It's Amber again, trying my best to not slip off the pier and into the lake, and today I'll be introducing you to the newest member of our lovely city staff!"

Amber grins wide as she eagerly gestures to the taller woman standing beside her. The woman matches her smile and meekly waves to the camera with one hand while her other adjusts the wind-whipped strands of black hair trying to poke her squinted eyes and the dusting of freckles all along her nose.

She looks back towards Amber with slightly pursed lips, unaware of what to say as the quiet starts to linger, sounds of waves and seagulls filling the blank air.

"Don't let the shy exterior fool you! This here is Daphne! Our new city archivist!"

She keeps grinning as she looks at the camera, her elbow gently nudging Daphne's, attempting to cue her to talk.

"Yessss! That's me! Hi!"

Daphne meekly waves again as she looks at the camera, noticing the camera man stifle a chuckle. Amber gently pretends to scratch her upper lip, doing her best to hide her own giggle.

"My name is Daphne Ridgeley, I'm the newest member of the city records office and happy to finally make it out here to Saint Joseph!"

Her words cut sharply after she talked, she feels her shoulders and elbows completely locked up and tight, and her hands feel exceedingly clammy as she nervously wipes them along her black slacks as she maintains an uncomfortable smile at the camera. Her eyes quickly darted to Amber, standing right beside her now back to her wide grin as she successfully stopped her snickering.

Shit, shit, shit I thought we were gonna get cues? Practice shots? Is this live? Amber said she would lead the entire tim! Fuck and this bitch just smiles the entire time? What do I say now? You told me you would ask all the questions and I just have to respond? Fuck!

Daphne's cheeks and forehead slowly flush with a slight glow of rose red, a change made more visible due to her pale complexion. Amber notices the changes and places a gentle hand on her shoulder.

"Thank you dear. We are so excited to have you. Why don't you tell the people a little bit about yourself and where you're from?"

She nods slightly as she looks Daphne in the eye then looks back at the camera, doing her best to lead the nervous girl on.

Daphne, almost feeling a light switch flicker in her brain, feels her shoulders loosen a bit as she releases a deep exhale through her teeth. Feeling a sense of composure as she picks up the cue she was being pushed towards.

Say something funny! Go for the bumpkin route, nobody ever expects that one.

"Of course! I'm from a little town called Vincennesin Indiana. Slightly smaller than here but twice as podunk."

The other two openly laugh with a good-natured tone causing Daphne to giggle at her own words, erasing most of the initial hesitation she had and giving her a little more time to think as the laughter faded.

Ok, basic joke and intro. It's just an icebreaker! Just keep the humor rolling and this will be a cake-walk. I can rebound from this. You got this.

Almost with a renewed confidence, Daphne confidently straightened her back, now feeling relaxed as she faced the camera and pointed at it with one, open palmed hand as she continued.

"Heh, don't let that fool you though, I may be from the sticks but I left there as soon as I could-I just graduated from IUPUI in..Indy..uh-Indianapolis with a Bachelors in Information Science! Which fun fact-is the most fun one!"

Daphne's words were followed with shimmy with one hand at each side as she cheesily smiled at the camera. Amber and the cameraman just smiled back with a deafening silence. Her moment of confidence immediately squashed, as if a bucket of cold water was just dumped over her head, she felt an internal cringe and her once jovial hands now slowly returned to her chest.

Oh my god I suck. Okay! No more jokes! Quick, anything else, literally anything about yourself. Hobbies! God what hobbies will I say? For the love of god don't say that one, bring up normal stuff, routine? Yes! Normal girl, type A, put together. Daphne the basic, boring small-town girl. Country gal turned into a refined college lady from the big-ol-city of Indy.ughflyover capital.
"Hehyeah, so-outside of the pencil pushing and analytical stuff I really enjoy..um..baking! Yeah love to make little pastries, and stuff like um, cakes! With all the frosting and the um, you know layering, and love to follow Pinterest for stuff like that lots of ideas-"

Amber, who had been gritting her teeth as she watched the rambling, attempted to interject.

"Daphne that's so grea-"

"Oh! And yeah---when I can psych myself up for it or when uh, the weather is nice I like jogging and walks! That's about it for.me."

Daphne squints hard realizing she had just blasted through, but Amber only responds with a polite giggle before she continues.

"Lovely! You sound like a firecracker for sure. Well, Saint Joseph and the rest of Berrien County definitely has plenty of trails and parks ready for you to run along, whenever you're up for it! We are very pleased to have you with us Daphne and look forward to you getting settled along one of Lake Michigan's best southern shores."

Amber extends a hand, shaking Daphne's for a moment as both look towards the camera.

"And with that we hope you folks give Daphne a warm welcome and show her that Saint Joseph charm if you happen to catch her around!"

With both girls waving their hands, the camera man gestures with his open hand, making a downward cutting motion before lowering the camera off his shoulder.

"Whooo buddy, and we are done!"

The camera man groaned after he spoke up as he removed the camera off his shoulder.

"Well, that wasn't too bad."

Amber smiled with closed lips as she spoke, then unclipped the mic from her cardigan, motioning Daphne to do the same.

"I guess, I'm just happy I didn't freeze or stutter any more than I did. I lock up when I get real nervous."

"Yeah...I can imagine."

Imagine? You assshole! This would have been better if you actually gave me a heads up

Daphne glared and cocked her head at her, but Amber wasn't even looking. Instead, she was fixated on collecting the mic from Daphne, unclipping the other girl's mic as she just stood there and handing it to the camera man.

"Here you go Julio, make sure those still have battery for our meeting with the sheriff later."

.Meanwhile she thinks she's sooooo important just because she gets to yap here and..

"Yes maam!"

Daphne stood there for another minute waiting for acknowledgement as she stewed in her own thoughts, watching Julio finish packing the camera gear and making his way down the pier towards the parked van down the lot, before Amber turned to her again.

Here we go, you better say sorry! Or I'll-

"Well anyway, you did great it was nice to meet you-"

With a fluid, seemingly practiced motion, Amber extends a hand and shakes Daphne's limp hand.

"-don't be a stranger and hope you have a good time down here in Saint Joe!"

And with that, she stepped away following behind Julio and leaving the grumbling Daphne alone.

Immediately turning plastic as soon as the cameras are off. Should have known. Saw that cakey mascara from a mile away; cheap-rubbing alcohol perfume and a basic outfit from Kohls- wait- she's already walking away from me. They really just leave like that? I thought I would need to sign something. Darn it, I was gonna deny and make them do more work, goddamit and I just stood there.

Daphne lets out a big exhale as she re-composes herself. Shaking her head, she patted the cross-body purse on her side, making sure she could feel her belongings under the fabric. She felt a soft vibration for a moment but it immediately stopped.

She huffed as she walked, making her way down the pier and toward her car, she watched as a distant Amber hopped into the van idling at the parking lot. Soon the van rolled and slowly backed up and pulled away, a swirl of dust from the gravel trailed behind as they left the sparsely populated lot.

As she walked the wind picked up slightly, causing her black slacks to start flapping like a sail. She adjusted her white, sleeveless blouse-ensuring that it stayed tucked into her pants before fumbling with a drawstring between her cleavage, pulling it tight and tightening the showy neckline cinching tightly around her ample breasts.

Daphne continued fighting the wind for another minute until she made it to the parking lot. Gravel crunching under her dust-stained flats, she trudged to her small sedan, letting out another long exhale as she sat in the driver's seat. She closed the door, sealing herself from the lakeside winds, giving her a momentary respite.

Silence, wonderful silence. Away from that, ick. She thinks she's all better. Life must be great when you can live life on cruise control playing plastic like that. Oh well, let her live in her little bubble. Her husband probably runs the station.

She rested her nape against the headrest for a while, her shoulders fully relaxed as she sat staring at herself in the rearview mirror. Daphne's mind started wandering back to her verbal stumbles moments ago at the interview.

"Ick."

She mumbled to herself as she shook her head. She rubbed her left temple with one hand before chuckling softly.

"Well, hopefully that's the last I have to do anything like that."

She smiled to herself as she buckled her seatbelt. Then she reached for her car keys in her purse, as she grabbed them her knuckle tapped her phone screen, causing it to light up and reveal the time and her latest notifications.

11:32 AM

*1 missed call from LOUIS - OFFICE MGR. (11:29 AM)*

"Oh of course I missed it."

Daphne's eyebrows furrowed as she tapped the icon and redialed Louis's number. Her right hand put the phone up to her ear as her left nervously tapped along the side of her car door, playing an imaginary piano as she waited for him to pick up.

"Berrien County Records Office, this is Louis speaking."

"Hey Louis! It's Daphne, I missed your call-"

"Miss Ridgeley, yes! How was the little interview? I hope Amber and Julio didn't give you too much of a hard time"

"It was fine! I didn't ramble too long so I consider it a win. Plus, Amber kept it brief."

Louis chuckled for a moment on the other line, causing Daphne to smile.

"Well good, I'm glad it went well-"

"Me too!"

"...Yes."

Fuuuuuuuuck. Why did I have to interrupt him? Overly-eager-ass.

Silence hung in the air for a moment until Louis continued.

"Heh.well in other good news, right now, IT is still getting your laptop situated. Instead of heading over here, go ahead and take an extended lunch. Check out some of the places along State Street, grab a bite and check out some of the shops."

"Really that's almost a whole hour and a half? I don't mind heading in and doing some filing work or something-"

"Trust me, you'll be doing lots of that.Take the time. Grab some coffee though, you'll want the caffeine once you're back here. Just be back before 1:00."

"Okay then, thanks Louis!"

"Don't mention it. See you later, Miss Ridgeley."

The line clicked dead.

Miss Ridgeley. Always so formal. I wonder if he's always like that. Does he call everyone by their last name?

Putting her phone back in her purse, Daphne shakes her head and retrieves her car keys.

Probably just his style, especially with new employees. Work. This was work. New city, new job, fresh start. No room for crushes, yet. Unless he knows? God I wish he knows and just pretends. Is he married, what if he is I can still chat or-

Daphne giggled as her body snapped her out, reminding her that she had skipped breakfast. Her stomach rumbled. State Street it is.

Following a brisk walk up and down the busy street, Daphne had found a cozy brunch cafe. After making her order, she settled on a small table close to a large window at the corner of the cafe, far from the bustling line of people looking at the menu and front counter. Moments later a barista delivered her order, a sandwich in a bag along with a steaming cup beside it.

Daphne quietly munched on her turkey panini, her legs crossed as she ate the sandwich on one hand with her phone in the other. She was mindlessly scrolling until a notification popped up.

*Harper: HEY BITCH! U BETTER SEND ME THAT INTERVIEW VID! lol

Seeing the message from her best friend made Daphne snort, she chuckled as she swallowed the rest of her panini down followed by a sip of her latte.

Geez Harper, even an hour away and I feel like I can hear you yelling. Never change. You crazy bitch.

Her finger tapped the notification, opening iMessage as the rest of her fingers danced along the screen.
