Having difficulty finding detailed info about specific substances that are or aren't safe to dump all over a latex suit or my S10 gas mask (butyl rubber, with some plastic parts). I don't see a recent thread about it here on UMD, and Google is being uncharacteristically unhelpful, so a quick compilation of what info I've gathered so far (mostly from outside the wam community):
- oil-based or greasy things with latex are no bueno; indeed, the site I ordered from insists that even traces of natural oil from bare skin will cause eventual degradation if not cleaned asap - oil & grease should be safe with the gas mask - water-based substances should all be okay with both latex and butyl (mud, methylcellulose, Natrosol, washable Tempera paint)
Anyone have any corrections or additions to make? Any suggestions or anecdotes would be greatly appreciated.
I can't remember if he's on here, but I chatted to one guy who'd had a lot of sessions with moderately fatty foods like real pies without having problems. His advice was to use plenty of silicone oil shiner/lube on the latex as a kind of barrier layer (which looks great for photos/video anyway) and clean up right after. I guess that would be not totally safe, but at least mitigating the risk. HEC/Natrosol type gunge is absolutely fine - a lot of commercial, condom-safe water based lubes use similar ingredients. And I've had my latex shorts in tidal mud with no ill effects. I reckon with mud my main worries would be with abrasion and tears rather than anything chemical.
but... you should be ok with anything long as you have a silicone barrier to start with and after play wash it carefully and quickly, dry it and get your silicone shine back on it before hanging.
