I forgot to mention this when I saw it a few months ago, but there was an episode of some dating game-type show hosted by Steve Harvey (never heard of it otherwise or seen it before or since; really not my cup of tea). In this case, the person they were trying to set up with a date was Dawn Wells, aka Mary Ann of Gilligan's Island fame. They had two bachelors competing for a date with her. One guy was nice and sincere but rather stodgy. The other guy displayed more personality, although it mostly showed in the form of some rather slick almost-pickup-line-type answers to questions.
So inevitably, coconut cream pies came up -- they usually do when Dawn Wells is on hand, since Mary Ann was endlessly baking them on the island and they've become kind of a trademark for even the latter-day Dawn Wells. The slick bachelor said this on the topic: "I not only like to eat coconut cream pie, I also like to wear coconut cream pie." There was kind of a stunned gasp from the audience and then a good 20-30 seconds of solid laughter as Steve Harvey did double, triple, and quadruple takes and tried to come to grips with this. Dawn looked pretty surprised but ultimately amused by the comment. It had clearly been taken by everyone on hand as a kinky, sexual thing, and the slick bachelor who said it did nothing to dispel this impressions. In the end, Dawn chose this guy over the other, stodgier one, diplomatically saying she liked them both but chose the slick guy for his sense of humor.
Last year, somebody posted a link to the YouTube clip above, which produced this tantalizing memory for the UMD's very own silent film star:
Norman Mabeld: "Years ago, I saw a different commercial, probably from around the same time, for a Shoney's/Big Boy kind of place (I don't remember who, for sure). It was similar, in that she [Dawn Wells] took a nice pie, but I don't remember any reference to Gilligan. They were probably used in different markets from this one. "
I know it's not likely, but we can dream that one day this alternate ad with Dawn taking another pie to her lovely kisser will surface.
This is certainly in my top ten mainstream pie in the face scenes. As a kid I watched Gilligan's Island hoping to see Mary Ann pied. I watched re-run after re-run in the 70's thinking I could possibly have missed an episode where it happened, so when I saw that Hurley had this on one of his clip tapes I bought it right away, thinking it would be mildly disappointing, but it was great coverage!
Hot diggity! I just stumbled onto this Dawn Wells clip on the Me-TV Facebook page and had completely missed it when it debuted earlier in May this year.
For anyone who has a fantasy of getting pied by Dawn Wells... here's some great help!
"The Summer of ME is all about comedy... hmhm... and you know what that means!" SPLAT! [Her mischievous laugh totally makes this clip.]
I posted some Dawn Wells photo collages in the Tina Louise thread a few weeks back (which were relevant there because the inevitable Ginger vs. Mary Ann Conflict broke out (officially a "conflict" rather than a "war," at least as far as the U.S. government is concerned). Since that thread went down in flames, all those photos were lost, and since a number of people enjoyed them (they got a lot of "love" clicks anyway) and many others never got a chance to see them, I thought I'd post them here in this Dawn Wells thread.
