Makeup(especially clown) and masks(depending on the kind of mask) can be fun and sexy. They can also help some models who aren't comfortable with revealing their identities to the world willing to do more photo shoots and videos that they normally would not do.
Personally, I'm not a fan of masks for the same reason I don't like goggles or other protective headgear in messy situations. They cover up the thing I most want to see: the mess recipient's face. A mask not only prevents a full view of the clean victim's face before the pie hits but also reduces the satisfaction of the pie hit itself because it keeps at least part of the face from getting covered in pie. (As you'd guess from my screenname, pies are my favorite type of mess, which is why I use them by example here, but this applies to almost any type of mess, although I suppose a heavy deluge of slime or mud might find a way of seeping down inside the mask more so than a pie could ever do.)

That last part may be just me, though... {Not just you }
I can do makeup if it's part of a costume and the model commits to a character I'm interested in seeing messy. Also, you can still spot prettiness and uniqueness through makeup. Again, maybe just me.
Again... Not just you.
I'm all for the no makeup standard myself. There's certainly nothing wrong with Make-Up, but I do think that when we see Make-Up only faces constantly (Media/Film/Television) as opposed to the opposite, that it can twist the baseline standard of what any one person should look like in your head. I had the same issue when someone who'd always worn glasses, started wearing none after Eye Correction Surgery, They just looked off to me for about a month or 2, eventually It was the new baseline.
I really want to see the face covered, but more importantly, the HAIR needs to get messy. For me, if the hair doesn't get messy...it's not WAM. Therefore any costume choice that covers/protects the hair is a no go for me.
I think makeup can really add something - any kind really, including full face paint.
Masks I'm not so keen on, but if, for example, the only way a model is willing to appear is in a mask then I'd rather see them wamming in a mask than not see them wamming at all.
I love makeup when it makes a woman look sexy. I am not into clown makeup or masks at all. Oddly, I also like the 'sexy librarian' look when the model is wearing glasses. She gets to remove them and have clean, expressive eyes again, if only for a short while. Expression means a lot, so anything that covers or blocks the face is a no-no for me.
Interestingly, a lot of lipstick has anti-pie characteristics, meaning whipped cream won't stick. (see photo) This leaves an important part of the features un-covered, helping to express reactions.
