I'm interested to see if there's any overlap between clothing people like to see in WAM vs clothing people find attractive in general.
For instance-
Both- I daydream a lot about being somewhere with my girlfriend and she's in a maxi dress that just sweeps the ground. I think about 90% of my comments are also about maxi dresses.
Everyday life only- I definitely find a sweater and skirt attractive in every day life, but I don't think I would in WAM.
WAM only- this is probably because you don't see them in every day life, but Aussie Girls Getting Slimed has definitely made me realize I'm still into a good evening gown trashing.
I love to wear my actual clothes to get muddy, I find it very exciting. Then, wash everything and wear it again the next day as if nothing happened. I find this especially exciting in my work clothes, my profile picture will give you a good idea what I'm talking about! Basically, the sort of things I like to wear in my "clean" life are exactly the sort of things I like to wear in my messy life.
First thing to be aware of is that tastes can and do change as we get older. There are lots of styles and outfits that I'd not have given a second glance to 30 years ago that I can now find attractive in WAM shoots, or in real life. Though core things tend to remain unchanging. I've always found women in jumpsuits and boilersuits very sexy and probably always will.
But yes, I do think there is a corelation between what we find attractive in general life and what we find attractive in a WAM situation. Most of us will have specific outfits or scenarios we remember from when we first realised we got a sexual reaction to seeing someone get wet or messy with clothes on, and the chances are the reason we were paying attention before they got messy is that we already liked how they looked clean.
Conversely if we don't like a specific look, seeing someone get wammed dressed that way is unlikely to change our view, more to entrench it further. Personally I think low-rise jeans are hideous abomination, low-rise jeans in wam scenes are abomination squared.
That makes sense and honestly answers some questions for me.
For cold weather clothing (hoodies, jackets, etc), it's always been like a "getting wet but not for a kink" sort of thing. Like someone I know found Jesus recently and got baptized in a hoodie and running shorts and posted the pictures on Facebook. Or the video of news people doing a polar plunge that was posted on the wetlook forum recently. The only specifically WAM one I can think of was when someone rode the Plunga a while back in a puffer coat and it didn't just look like they had just been playing in the snow all days. If I had to put a finger on it, it's because it's clothing that's supposed to keep you warm and now it's wet so ??
For maxi dresses, definitely an extension of the long dress getting total coverage thing and since they're definitely more versatile than an evening gown. But like you said- it'll be interesting to see if in 30 years my SO will still be able to turn me on solely by throwing one on with a Jean jacket for a date night.
The "girl next door" always has more appeal to me than (say) fancy dress. So I guess everyday clothing wins out for me. Dresses, skirts and tops are my first choice, almost no matter what the style. Formal gowns such as wedding dresses and the like hold less appeal, whereas winter clothing has zero appeal for me. That said, these are individual choices, probably (and rightly) there are almost as many opinions as members of this forum.

I can very much relate to this covered in mud now with my day clothes at the moment
That's definitely the case for me. I just love getting messy in the clothes I'm regularly wearing. I've always noticed too I have a better time getting my change of clothes muddy after I got the outfit I was looking to ruin in the mud already dirty.

Go with what you like.
Yup.
There's an outdoor concert venue near us where general admission seats are on an incredibly steep lawn. I have a somewhat recurring fantasy of my girlfriend wearing a longer maxi to a concert there, it starts raining at the end and by some process by the time we get back to the car she's coated from head to toe with mud.
For me there is deffinitely correlation between clothes i like to wear/see normally and clothes i like to wear/see getting wet and messy. This does include fancy dress and costumes but moreso if its not just a thing bought for a wam session. The thought of somebodies real outfit getting messy is appealing and i think the nicer it looks normally, the nicer it will look soaked or even covered in mess.
Absolutely yes, the clothing I like to see in everyday life makes the WAM better. My substance of preference is natural mud pits.
I tend to like to see dresses and office wear and especially gowns. White fabric is very nice, because most mud pits are dark. But in the cases where a mud pit is a lighter color, then a darker fabric is preferred. For females, satin and silk work well.
Males should go into the mud pit wearing business suits.
I once did a mud pit wearing a red sweater. Not my usual wallowing wear, but it was a cool day.
It washed out so well that I occasionally wore it to work for about a year. There was just something very satisfying about the idea that this sweater, while not as fancy as a gown or as shimmery as satin, had participated in a fetish, and nobody at work had any idea.
i think the only real difference for me (of liking something normally but not in wam) is jeans. jeans in general can look great on a girl but i dont like them in wam (tight denim short shorts is a different story) because they're generally hardy and my wam preferences trend towards stuff that is completely mismatched with mess (from everyday wear to business wear, formal wear, activewear/sports wear and costumes) and trending towards overtly 'feminine' fabrics and designs.
that said, stuff like bulky winter clothes(though bodytight underclothes is another matter entirely) and stuff that's more arguably niche usually (but not always) is a general no for me.
I usually wear my clothes I've worn during the day when I take a long soak, and it's a turn-on for me to not think about practical things and just get into the shower or bath fully shod with my clothes, shoes, purse, jewelry and accessories.
I may ruin things sometimes (usually forgetting something important in my bag, or an article of clothing or accessory doesn't take to the water well) but honestly the fact I may ruin something is stimulating to me, a taboo feeling of being improper.
I prefer to wear nice dressy clothes, so that's what I usually soak in.

Nessie
Wow, that is hot! Love this story, thanks for sharing.
I've always had some correlation in that I very much like wearing wetlook clothes - leggings, tops, coats, dresses even though i'm getting a bit old for it now!
But I've also done the thing where "oh that came out clean!" and worn it to work or something afterwards, which is a deliciously naughty thought when you're stuck in some awful meeting My last set of photos left the bra i had on with a delicate yellow stain, but just on the lace and stitching as if it had been like that all along. So i still wear that occasionally lol

Absolutely this, most of the things I've posted pictures in I've either worn out and about or for work. I sort of like it knowing that only a little while earlier what I'm out with friends or sitting at my desk in was completely covered in pies and cake batter.
Having a fetish for graphic t-shirts, it's pretty obvious that for me such a correlation exists. But it actually came from a place of hatred at first, believe it or not. I used to have trauma about people making remarks on what was on the t-shirts I was wearing, and feeling embarrassed about it, which started the very weird relationship I have with graphic tops. Now I love them and they're all I wear, so I suppose all's well that ends well. Well, until I decide to destroy one of my articles of clothing only because of the sexy design on it.
My woman and I very often go out Spring through Fall wearing what also meets/fits within the tight bracket of what we'll wear when it comes to WAM'ing. I'm only Graphic T's and shorts, for her its well fitted Tanks and tshirts with shorts. We go out in these quite often under normal circumstances including some of whats seen in our pics.
Her WAM outfit range expands to a range of dresses but her going out in one is super rare especially her flashier stuff.
It also makes it easier to randomly carry out antics/mischief on one another when at home being we're nearly ready all the time and that pool out back will temp us.
