I voted 'No-never' but there is a point where you are looking at a pile of mess and can't even see if there is a girl buried there somewhere. I've seen this in mud photos - you don't even see any hint of a person in the picture. But even that is a thrill, just knowing there is a girl in there somewhere, though it would be best to at least see an outline!
Here's one from an upcoming Emi adventure where the pies pretty much hide her.
This is actually a great example of an inherently biased survey. I definitely think there's a thing as too much mess, but don't think that mess should be "QUITE" limited, which leaves a bit of a conundrum as there is no answer which properly reflects my view. In the way you've phrased the question, you're seeking out an answer which you think is inherently better, while leaving less room for a dissenting opinion as a result.
Now, more to the point of the question, I love WAM for the more sadistic elements that come with messing someone up. I get turned on by the knowledge that they find it uncomfortable, unpleasant, and know that they will have a hard time cleaning up after. In order to feel that way however, I need to be able to actually see the person getting messy. It's the transition from clean to messy that is the appealing part, so if they are already completely covered in mess, there's no room to become any messier.
For example, the attached picture of the woman in the stocks nicely sums up everything I look for. You can clearly see her features and her displeasure at getting messy, as well as the enjoyment of the woman pieing her.

Whilst it is sometimes nice just to have gunge poured over a woman's head .....
I also like a woman starting clean, smart and looking 'respectable'. The anticipation of knowing she will get messy is important.
Then to see her getting her body and clothes getting messy first gives an opportunity to see the expression on her face, before that is covered in muck.
I quite like seeing a small amount of "stuff" do a lot of "messing" - so 3 or 4 well-placed pies, maybe just one or two buckets of goo and that's your lot. When I'm watching a video the 10th bucket of gunge doesn't really change anything and I've probably stopped watching by then.
When I'm getting messy or in a session however...I tend to absolutely go for it. I think that's more because I've splashed out a 3-figure sum on a location and/or model before I've even taken into account the (honestly pretty cheap by comparison) mess, so I want to get my "money's worth" if that makes sense...no point spending about £200 and consuming several hours of time to only get a couple of pies in the face after all!
I'm going somewhere inbetween. Yes there can be TOO much for me at least. If your model looks like nothing more than the slodge monster of Tipranian 3 when you're done, it might be too much. I like them to be still identifiable as "hooman" by the end.
I think there is a such thing as too messy without at least allowing the target to wipe some of it away first. At some point you hit diminishing returns when they are just sitting there taking it and I do rather prefer that the person is recognizable to some degree underneath all the mess.
To be clear, I wouldn't say that "too much" ruins it for me, just that it becomes pointless after a while, particularly if there is no variety to the substances. However, if it is something special like hitting all the colors of the rainbow with slime or the substances are being changed up to make a unique blizzard of mess, then the more the merrier.
I don't personally think theres such a thing as too much mess. I actually love insane amounts of mess: just fully and completely covered, submerged, sloppy etc. It's good to start off all clean and pretty, but at the end of the shoot I am all about that sexy blob monster look. Super thick and heavy, like tasting it in your mouth and hard to see/hear so have the sensory deprivation thing going on too along with the weight/texture of the mess. I like seeing models in scenes were I can imagine the sensations myself.
I don't think you can have too much mess. I love the colour aspect of Wam and like to go between buckets of say Beans, then custard, then natural yoghurt, then spaghetti, then maybe more custard or something along those lines. The visual effect of doing this looks brilliant in my eyes. Starting with a black dress and adding custard or natural yoghurt at the beginning just looks amazing!
A couple of my examples. The final pic from Glamour Gunge is just nuts!
I voted no because for some of us love seeing a model go from clean and pristine to becoming a almost totally unrecognizable blob of whipped cream with pieces of pie crust, or mud or my personal favorite, shaving foam.
I've watched videos where I LOVED the model and was sad when it was over. Like, "C'mon, aren't there more pies somewhere??" And I've also DONE shoots where I wished I'd made more pies for the scene! (I actually grabbed my "reserve pies" for Scene 2 to use during Victoria's Scene 1, since she was digging it so much!)
But I've also had shoots (especially with a first-timer) where I've used less pies than planned, because I could tell the model was getting exhausted.
That's the difference when you're a producer: You have to balance the amount of mess with the comfort level of the model. In theory, I COULD hit every model with 50 pies a scene. In reality, a lot of them can't handle that and it's not fair to expect them to. (I'd warrant a few would quit outright, while the majority would suffer through it and then never work with me again. And best not to burn your bridges if you can help it.)
And it's worth noting that "amount of mess" isn't the be-all end-all for most customers either. The recent secretary scene with Breana has sold better than almost all her other new clips, despite having less mess (and more clothing) than any of them. And on the flipside, an old clip of mine had a record 40 pies for one single model.... but it didn't sell well, because honestly.... The model got exhausted halfway through, and you could tell. And it frankly would've been a better scene with half the mess. (Right concept, wrong model??)

Are you referring to the Volume 40 scene with Liz? I am a fan of Liz, but I kind of agree it went a little long. I don't remember her demeanor or mood during the scene, but I checked your website and after the setup the script ends with "much improvised pieing." If more of it was written and planned out, I think it would've worked out better. I don't know how well she was at improv, so maybe in that sense you used the wrong model, but I am glad she came back after a long time hiatus.
Speaking generally, sometimes videos where there is a lot of mess, and not much dialogue, model reaction, or something else going on to hold interest it can make them a little boring.
Shortcomings aside, Liz is still great, and I have watched that scene from time to time. An average SSS scene is still pretty good to me.

Yup and her energy level was really low (she stopped modeling soon after) which was probably the reason I was disappointed. One of these days I'll need to try a 40-pie scene with the RIGHT model. Like a high-energy one. We actually did something similar with Shelly for her "birthday scene" (23 pies, plus slimes, plus a cake!) but reaction was so-so and I decided to ease up on the pie count after that.
Once we achieve unrecognizable status, we have done our job. Usually about 20 pies and two buckets of batter. So once we reach that point, there really is no need to add more mess. But we do like to recycle the slop mix, and pour that on the models for the as messy as possible look.
So I guess a shoot becomes too messy when a mess is added that would have been better as the first mess on a clean model at the beginning of a new video.
Well as my twitter bio will tell you, I'm the reason less isn't more. I also like to say 'more is more!'
I love absolutely fuckloads of mess. Love it. I have attempted a few videos with restricted amounts and it just doesn't do it for me in the same way. It can be very arty though and appreciated in a different way, and that is good if you have an excellent photographer on hand (Henners )
Cupcake and I once tried to get as messy as we could with about 4 tiny jars of chocolate sauce and that was quite fun but more as a preliminary game than a full session
