For people who enjoy shaving foam/cream, which one do you usually buy and why do you buy it? Better for your skin? Most amount for the least price? Makes the best pies?
This has been a topic that has been discussed many times, but I feel it's important as (for some) shaving foam/cream pies are the main stable for WAM adventures.
There is as stated a few factors when choosing, price being a big one, but also feel and irritation.
Most supermarket own brands is the cheapest, but some can be watery.
Big brand cream is the most expensive but is usually gives the most volume. However, it can be a bit medicated and cause stinging, even after being left.
I tend to find Erasmus foam (non sensitive) is good for both price and foam volume/ feel (gives a good splat) Also the Erasmus hard shaving stick, which you can scrape into flakes and with a little water, make your own. You have a bit more control, and 1 stick makes loads, so good value.
On the other side dedicated pie foams can be good. The joke shop ones, maybe not, but I can highly recommend Avalanche foam, it's amazing. Messy fx foam as well, although when left, does deflate. And can sting abit. It is great to clean up as seems to dissolve itself.
Unsure if Avalanche foam and messy fx foam are available in the US, but could something similar.
All in all it can be a bit of minefield, finding a brand that feels good and is in budget has to be key, but once found, I'd stick to it (no pun intended)
If needed for a big session, then a bulk buy would cut cost.
I'm sure others with give input as well, but I hope this helps
Barbasol is my go too, gillette is fine too but is more expensive, AVOID the generic men's shave foam that gave me chemical burns on my face and made me bleed a little bit. The dollar stores are a good place to source foam, but I would avoid the Mens shave foam in the blue can.
For my shaving cream, I usually just buy low brand for sensitive skin. It has low odor, decent volume, and not crazy expensive. But it still can cause minor irritation around the eyes or prolonged exposure. A simple solution, add some non scented body lotion and a touch of water, and mix it well. It won't dry out the skin as bad, will retain its thick creamy texture, and the coverage will look and feel very smooth.
I tend to avoid gel cream that you have to lather because of the high price, low volume and high perfume content. I also avoid shaving cream with any alcohol or gimmicky additives claims.
I've tested shaving cream with many other substances, so here are my top three that I've found work the best;
Lotion with no oil base, and no drying agents. Makes it less harsh on the skin. Clear corn syrup will make it extra sticky and fun to play with. Just make sure to wash thoroughly after. Elmer's glue, contact lens solution, blue dawn dish soap. This will create an incredibly stringy sticky fluffy slime depending on your mix ratio. U can also add acrylic paint or food coloring to change the color.
If you want to make some very good pies, get yourself a piping bag, and fill it with shaving cream. Squeeze it onto your plates or crusts with much easier control that holding down the button on the can. It also makes the foam look better and not like you just sprayed it onto a plate. You can also premix your shaving cream and other substance in a large bowl or bucket with an egg beater or wisk, and it will evenly fluff your cream. Scoop it into the piping bag and then onto a plate.
Combine Gillette Foamy or Barbasol with Mr Bubble Foam Soap in a can. Very mild ( it's for kids), great colors and scents and feels wonderful being buried under lots of it . Even tastes good for your mouth soaping fans
Just tried Barbasol Soothing Aloe so far (and again today, in fact) but I never thought of adding anything to it to change the consistency! Thanks for the advice.
Another great thing about Barbasol is the easy cleanup. One towel got my semi-long hair looking like nothing happened (well, maybe like I broke a sweat but that's it) and if there is any lingering scent, it's close enough to deodorant that I doubt anyone would suspect anything.
If you're in the UK, one of the best I've found is Boot's own brand. It expands nicely, so you can get a lot of pies from one tin, it's fairly inexpensive (about £1:45 a tin) and makes a nice fluffy pie. Other good brands. Superdrug's own brand, Nivea and Gillette, but get the orange tin ones. The black tins are very wet and sloppy.
