My guess is the makeup of this audience is less British/European where watery gunge seems to be the main WAM pleasure. If I had to guess, I'd say there are a lot of North Americans here and for us, the pie reigns King. I am a pie aficionado myself.
It is what it is, but people here are free to detail or discuss all sorts of WAM, so whatever floats your boat (so long as that boat isn't children or scat).
I believe that the answer lies in this passage, from the Book of Wam.
"And as the Lord made the bush and the plants and the animals, in his garden he put a tree. And the tree grew and bore fruit that was on one side like the thick cream of milk and on the other like bread but hard and flaky.
And so it came to pass that Eve, in her anger, threw out all of Adams fig leaves onto the lawn. And then she stormed out under the tree. And God shook the tree so that one of the fruit did fall onto the face of Eve. And it was good.

That's the passage I was looking for, but I couldn't find it!
As most of you are probably aware, I like pies. (THAT'S the understatement of the year! )
As ppinkhasoff said, "I don't fully understand it myself, but I absolutely (love) pieing and being pied". Just as we've all wondered about the origins of our wam fetish, I don't know why pies excite me more than anything else.
As a couple of people have mentioned, if pies were the first slapstick comedy we saw, then maybe that could cause it. Yes, part of it may be American culture vs. English culture, and what we were exposed to at an early age. Slime didn't really become popular on TV in the U.S. until I was over 25 years old. But as a kid, I watched Laurel & Hardy movies on TV, and The Three Stooges, and mostly, it was pies. There was the occasional white-wash or mud fight, or tub of paint, cement, etc. But the larger proportion of it was pies/cakes, etc. Some of it was whipped cream pies, some of it was fruit pies, and some of it was shaving cream pies, but they all fell under the heading of "pies". And there have been several discussions on here about the pies in the variety programs, sitcoms, and game shows of the '50's, 60's, and '70's.
Mud wrestling didn't become popular in the nightclubs until what, the 70's? So when that was all the rage, then the TV programs and movies started featuring it.
But more than anything else, if I see a pretty woman, particularly nicely dressed, take a pie in the face, BAM! That's it for me! It plays over and over in my mind for hours afterward!
I don't think we'll ever really know, "Why?", but I'm sure glad it's so popular on here!
I'm likely a small minority here, but pies do nothing for me as far as a turn-on. Most food related mess doesn't do much for me, as I prefer a more liquid mess- especially immersion, such as in a deep mud puddle. Pies (and many other foods) are what I think of as a 'dry' mess. I'm also completely NOT into the humiliation angle- any woman involved has to be willing/amused/turned on/etc.
Growing up, I can remember being fascinated by the mud antics at Woodstock (the original- I was 7 years old), so I suspect that's where that comes from. I like seeing liquid-mud covered women and I like being muddy myself. I also enjoy wetlook, both seeing and doing.
It's a little rough, but I made a GIF of Natalie having a pie fight with herself. Below is the same image displayed twice with the bottom one flipped around (fair is fair):

Pies were the form of WAM I was exposed to growing up; Three's Company, Mandrell, Brady Bunch, Donny & Marie, etc...goes on and on. It was almost a standard for comedy shows in the 70's and 80's.
By the time gunge came along I was older and already hooked on pies.
It was mainly gunge for me when growing up, but pies were for certain the best of the lot (and they would come up sometimes). I just remember loving seeing a pretty kids TV presenter get one in the face and though I wasn't getting erections, there was a strange thrill to it to the point that I was fantasizing pie fights in my head even when I was 9. These were as an adult having a pie fight usually with an adult woman.
For me, pies have minimal impact, no pun intended. I'm mostly attracted to the thought of extremely attractive women getting gunged and/or, especially, gungings each other. Especially as a consequence of some sort of game and/or as part of a humiliation scene.
Also, for me, this is entirely a visual fetish. I'm actually turned /off/ by the idea of getting messy myself.
As for the earliest wam I had access to, that would be YCDTOTV. Not surprisingly, gunge and humiliation became my focuses.
