I think about this occasionally because (being bisexual) for me I think men can also pull this off but usually women are far greater at it.
I think the both theoretical and material "glamour" of women helps and to see that contradicted and such by a pie is quite the factor.
Also women tend to make more of expressionality. When men try such things it feels ever so slightly more performative whilst female physicality is more assertive.
Also their hair is generally speaking better.
And can also make outfits actually look good.
Not that any of this is binary of inert ect. A lot of what I just said is based on mysticism and cultural stuff rather than anything ingrained onto bullshit hard wired gender programming. It's just where general assumptions and attitudes have led for me though they could easily fall flat or crumble.
The quality of the pie hit(impact and smearing) as well as timing and pacing are key for me. I feel like you are more likely going to see people pie their boss or wife or friends the way I like to see. When I buy a scene, more often then not the hits tend to be unsatisfying (held by the edge and slapped or weak or awkward in some way). I can understand not wanting to accidentally hurt someone but I've done it and seen it done enough times to know that unless you are straight up brutal and thoughtless, quality pie hits shouldn't be a problem.
Personal tastes about wardrobe and particulars of the target aside: I love a pie that explodes and engulfs the face while you can still see the expression outlined underneath.
Piedpinups has a few excellent examples of this in Gif form, though the models are topless so I can't repost as an unverified account.
The Man and the Wife and Slapstickstuff also have some great ones. PieTargets was also great for this back in the day, plus several PieZone clips.
It's not the only kind of pie I like, but it's great to just see someone plastered with a pie and you can just see their expression underneath.
I'm also a big fan of a bit of color, especially a little chocolate syrup, pudding, or butterscotch in an exploding pie.

Is it messiness, close-up, expressions, textures, or something else entirely?
So many things go into a scene/video that I love. Attractiveness of the woman, how is she dressed, the set-up, the coverage, etc. Some people have hard preferences: real pies or shaving cream, humiliation or sensuality, nude or clothed, scripted or not. Me? I have small preferences (I like a nice set of legs, I don't like vulgar language (even though I use it all the time myself), I prefer nicely dressed like business suits, etc.) but overall I can't pin down why some videos work for me and others don't. Sometimes it isn't even pie coverage or the woman-- it is a line or a scenario that grabs my attention. One of my favorite videos is on WAMTEC's site and it is clearly from the early 90s-- video quality is poor -- and the video is short, but I love the scenario because it reminds me of a formational pie scene from my youth. In short? Sometimes I don't know what I like to see in a pie video, I just like to see women get pied. Simple as
