Hi all I have a question for those who are into warhammer. How do you get into it? I've been reading and watching videos about the lore, factions and memes about the death corps of kreig and their shovels.
The table top community is large where I live and it might be a good social outlet. Looking for faction recconmmendations and the rules behind it.
Now I have asked my friends IRL but they ended up arguing about who is better and something about the Blood angels, Chaos and Abbadon.
i got into in by the dawn of war games. then progressed the reading the novels and then picked up the 'at the time' starter kit. several thousand dollars and a few years and the rest is history. i kinda dropped out of it a few years back due to the increasing cost and the fact that several factions got completely redone with brand new (and expanded) model ranges. still have my several old armies (and a bunch of half and uncompleted stuff) but i generally stick to just the games and novels now. it's cheaper.
if you want to get into 40k in general but avoid the huge cost, dont bother with tabletop and just go with the games and novels. that's where most of the actual storytelling is these days. i personally recommend the Ciaphas Cain novel series which manages to parody 40k itself within the canon.
Wow, this takes me back. I was a player of traditional RPG games (D&D, AD&D, etc.), when I was a kid. A friend of mine father was clearly out his garage and asked if I wanted any books he was throwing out. I said I'd have a look, and couldn't believe it when I saw he had a 1st edition Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader Rulebook. It was in immaculate condition as well. So I swiftly grabbed it.
Sadly I only played it few times, as the bunch that I usually played with, weren't keen on it, and preferred AD&D.
The Man and The Wife said: I've played World of Warcraft since it's inception and still do
I started somewhere between TBC and WRATH, then I was in and out for CATA, all of MoP, WoD, Legion, and BFA, Skipped Shadowlands entirely and just got back in 2 weeks ago for Dragonflight. It felt very different on first entry, but after Editing the UI back to what I was most used to, and finding all the addons I relied on, feels like I never left.
Hoping to start Questing again soon, but it's been about 2 weeks of Cleaning out Banks and Alt Prep in-between Bag Farming Treasure Goblins every 2 hours. lol.
Also - Never got into WH40k - But after Henry Cavil's Announcement, I'm planning on checking out the TV show (if it get made)
your best bet is to visit your LGS and see if they have any beginner leagues. From there start with a small army, so you can see if you want to invest the $$. There are a few places online where you can get most of the stat blocks for free, so that helps a bit.
As for painting of said army, there's a few avenues. I would recommend painting yourself, but there are shops on etsy and twitter that will happily do this for you. (Shameless plug: I freelance miniature paint on Etsy and Fivrr in my spare time).
Picking a faction is more about personal preferences, I play Imperial Fists myself, but was thinking about picking up Nurgle/Plague Marines at some point.
I played warhammer fantasy as a kid and got into 40k during covid lockdown I'd recommend looking for one of the starter sets which are normally a decent discount and see if you enjoy building and painting the miniatures before trying to find a game
Thanks for all the help guys. The starter sets are quite pricy for me at the moment but I did choose a faction. I like the sound of the Tau, but since the Imperium of Man has more I going to go with the Salamanders.
Also since my first post I've watched a video series on the seige of Vraks and I now understand why there are many memes about the Death corps of Kreig.

This, I enjoy the painting, but the assembly is a pain. My current pile o' shame...

I agree assembly is a pain. I remember when I first started, miniatures were made of metal. Although they changed to plastic, with a separate base.
I got Space Hulk when it was first released, and the miniatures (marines and genestealers) were plastic. I was a bit miffed, and most of the genestealers looked drunk on their bases.
