So, I know that this site is great for chatting with like-minded peeps and arranging sessions, but when I was younger, I fantasized about joining a WAM club like S.L.O.S.H. and being part of a somewhat local, close-knit community of wammers.
Now that I'm older, it doesn't seem that many exist, especially here in the states. I know S.L.O.S.H. still exists, and I'd join if I could, but of course traveling to the UK is pretty damn expensive. I do know a couple of great members from here in my area and I've had some great times with them, but I'd love to see an actual WAM society like SLOSH here in my region of the U.S, or even the U.S. at large.
Can somebody prove me wrong? Am I just missing these things altogether? I still value this site and all the great things we can do on here, but I feel like the purpose here is somewhat different.
As much as I think a US-based S.P.L.O.S.H type group is a great idea, one of our greatest drawbacks is distance. Over here in the States, it's a long haul from one spot to another. Heck, it's 800 miles from Port Arthur (the Texas/Louisiana border) to El Paso, and it's a five-hour (or so) flight from Houston to Seattle. Ideally we'd find a centralized location such as Kansas City, but even that would be a costly trip for those of us in the central states.
That said, I'm more than happy to help get something going, if others are willing!
The Society for Creative Anachronism - basically a bunch of LARPers (hey, I have layers) is international and divides itself up into progressively smaller and smaller units. Where I live (northern VA) is part of the region based in Atlanta, with progressively smaller parts, which are supposed to meet regularly. The smallest layer of organization I live covers just a handful of counties in VA and MD.
Applying this kind of organization, if someone were to start a group similar to SLOSH, then it could be national, with regional chapters, that cover a few states, which in turn have quasi-state chapters, which have county chapters.
While I have no idea how to get such an organization started, I wouldn't mind brainstorming with other folks to see what could be come up with.
I would like to see a regional type club or group. Sometimes I fell like I'm the only one into WAM in Western North Carolina...even though I know of several folks who are close to me.
^ Join the S.L.O.S.H. facebook page. I posted a message like this, and got replies from guys all over the country, and at least two of them were from North Carolina.

Do you have a link to the page? I can't find it using the FB search...
