the 1 lb container holds about 4 cups dry measure. I use about 1/4 cup per gallon, so somewhere around 16 gallons per lb. Thickness depends on temperature though. I use it hot. It would probably stretch to an additional 4-8 gallons at room temperature, depending on how thick you want it.
The Chemistry Store carries Hydroxyethylcellulose for around the same price. In my experience, it makes more and mixes easier than the grade of methylcellulose they use to sell.

Kid-safe powder paint from the Early Learning Centre is I believe the usual way to do it over here, I think you have the ELC over there too?
We use kids powder paint in the gunge that we sell. You should be able to get that or any kids colour poster paint will work. Its usually non toxic and safe to use. I'd avoid food colouring as that can stain.
