Over the past few months I've now seen a growing tend from people going outdoors to get muddy without doing basic health and safety first! reading posts on another muddy forum and witnessing first hand I have to speak up for anyone else out there who's looking to take advantage of the UK heatwave with muddy action.
1. Check the location and its history ( some areas like quarries are deeper than you think, and some have hidden dangers like broken rubble and sharpe broken or damaged metal just under the surface )
2. Do NOT jump into areas of deep mud wearing layers of clothing or boots as the weight and suction may hold you down and hinder your escape safely.
3. Check tide times for rivers, becks and streams! people have been known to jump into mud and get stuck as a fast moving tide comes in.
4. NEVER go somewhere alone! Always take a first aid kit, food and water and use a rope or rope ladder to climb out if there is no easy direct or shallow way out.
5. Beware of Weil's Disease " it is the severe, life-threatening form of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection transmitted to humans primarily through contact with the urine of infected animals, particularly rats " Get a vaccination from your GP for safety first. ( If your afraid to tell your GP you like getting muddy say you have taken up kayaking )
