Does anyone remember this, well, I guess it was a film project? That had copious amounts of pies/mess in it. Early 80s college setting - wanna say somewhere on the east coast, a la Jersey or NYC.
It was an early "product" of the Pie Mafia (RIP?) and remains one of my favorite things in the history of WAM. The pies in this alone were amazing: sloppy, gloppy, sometimes only one pie hit per girl before scene ends, and it's phenomenal. All the girls are kinda giggly and clearly don't quite know what to make of it all, but they're all very sweet and "game"; lots of college t-shirts/sweatshirts, and, yes, lots of teased 80s hair. (Which I say adds to the charm of the project.)
The whole thing seemed to be a sort of comedy sci-fi thriller, but i could never quite figure out the context of the story for the whole film, which kind of makes it all the more fun and bizarre, there's a part of me that wonders "exactly the hell is going on?" every time I watch the clips, and that adds to the experience. If memory serves, it's something to do with girls wearing bagels around their neck as necklaces, which seemed to symbolize some kind of otherworldly invasion or mystery.
But, i digress...
I have it broken up in chunks on one of Hurley's Clip Tapes (on VHS), and have often thought of getting VHS converted just b/c of this scene.
Anyone else remember it/know of what I'm speaking?
ALSO: If any of the Mafiosos who produced it or some of our better "historians" know any more details about the making of it, please share! (And thanks/congratulations for creating something so amazing.)
It's wonderful, and for you "newer-bies", you gotta track it down.
that's a really really good point, and i know exactly what you mean.
i think as an adolescent/20-something stumbling upon WAM/The UMD, it was about the most exciting thing i'd ever found.
But you are totally right, it was most likely a YCDTOTV-y excuse for college dudes to smash pies in unwitting, and as i say almost always very game (although there's at least one super-shy girl you can tell is like "really? this has to happen?") girls' face.
well, now i feel just terrible....
i think that's what taking it out of context and chopped up as pie-clips on Hurley's tapes (that's where i first encountered it) does, and it sort of says something in general about clips/images, in and of themselves.
For me, back in the early to mid-90's, those amateur clips on Hurley's clip tapes were my favorite things to come across. Before the internet took off and there was a dearth of wam material, I'm sorry to say that ethical questions that should have come into my head were obliterated by my hormones. Looking back, though, a lot of those scenes that I can recall it did seem the 'victim's' were at least aware of the filmer's interest in it.
I think Robby genuinely brought up a great point -- and you've answered it in as genuine a way as could possibly be asked for, Map. Thank you for that...
As for the rest of your comments/the background on the film, i feel like I've struck gold. As I say, one of my favorite things in the history of WAM, and to get this backstory on it is almost like striking gold for an adventurer, the questions I've had about this project have "haunted" me (good way, just in terms of sheer curiosity) for years!
I can sense the edge in your words hinting at what seems to be some animosity/jealousy/backbiting amongst the core UMD/WAM community, and frankly I do not wish to open up those doors or get anybody riles up at anyone, especially as some have parted from UMD or, worse, this earth over the years.
I actually would like to see the whole thing someday, because it's just nutty and goofy and weird enough that -- well, like you say. It was the late 80s and you were college dudes with a video camera. I think some of our favorite WAM comes from that era/those circumstances, or at least I know mine do.
I remember well stumbling onto UMD (and some YCDTOTV) stuff while surfing the World Wide Web in the mid/late 90s at my parents' place one holiday and, well, the world was never the same...
Again, thanks for sharing some insight and honesty! Will def hit you up with a few questions if/as they come to me...
Mid-90s huh? Geesh I was a teenage boy just discovering this whole world for myself..... unfortunately, being a teenager I couldn't purchase any of Hurley's clip tapes or other great material. Reading this I feel like I missed something big. I'm with Joe, it would be great to see the film.... either pieces or its entirety!
I really enjoyed the "Bagels" footage when it first surfaced on a Hurley tape too. But I've always dug the girl-next-door-getting-pied thing... I loved that about Neil's very early videos too, and it's what I was going for when I started SlapstickStuff.
Some of you are fortunate to grow up in an era where you didn't spend most of your formative years thinking you were *completely* alone in having this interest. For the rest of us, every little scrap of footage--be it YCDTOTV, or a random TV or film clip caught once, like the Mandrell sisters--was a HUGE deal. And seeing something in the flesh? Like a pie booth? That was the Holy Grail. Being able to actually PIE an attractive female in person? That seemed beyond all rational expectation...
...Which is to say, when our middle school class was tasked to write a "script" based on the phrase "Tempus Fugit," I somehow worked in a pie-in-the-face for the very cute girl who was participating. I am not ashamed by this. (Also, she shot it down IMMEDIATELY upon reading. And no, my script was not chosen.)
My favorite amateur production of all time. It was just perfect for the "girl next door" type of set up. Off memory, I remember the lady in the Spuds McKenzie shirt and also one in a pink sweater that just took everything like a champ.
So no chance of ever seeing these clips surface again as digital downloads then? I've got the original Hurley Tapes in a locked chest somewhere in the back of a closet, but I haven't hooked up a VCR in years.
I was right on the edge of that Pre-Internet No one understands this but me phase many here describe, but I have to say, those types of clips were what I always fancied. Amateur scenarios played for laughs.
