PEG is the basis of a number of laxatives. Whole bowel irrigation with polyethylene glycol and added electrolytes is used for bowel preparation before surgery or colonoscopy. PEG is also used as an excipient in many pharmaceutical products. When attached to various protein medications, polyethylene glycol allows a slowed clearance of the carried protein from the blood.
The article does mention that it is used to create the slippery patches on razors. It must be safe, as people get nicked by shaving and this stuff would have access to the blood stream. I stlll wouldn't eat it though. It appears to be identical to polyacrylate slime, which can be purchased in powder form and will pour the same way. (famous last words, 'I'll just pour out a bit')
PEG is actually used as a food additive and isn't any more dangerous than glycerol, finding most of the same purposes. One might think that the typical uses of these compounds (from skincare to paintball filling to food) makes them sound like ideal WAM substances...
