1. How bad is it to get out of a girl's hair and off their skin? It looks like it would be murder to me, but people do it all the time, so maybe not?
2. Where do you buy large quantities for cheap?
3. Any tips for making it fall quickly onto a victim's head? Messy Darla fills balloons with syrup and pops them over her head, and while the end result is great, it's quite a bit of work to get there.
Amazon 5 litre bottle around £12 when I did Sticky Sunday scene.
Its very heavy ! I used an oil sump syringe by draper to fill ballons with gunge. Its a slow pour. I guess if you warmed it up by standing the carton in warm water it would flow more freely.
Also depends on what kind of syrup you mean. Assuming maple, there is another distinction. Your typical Log Cabin, Aunt Jemima, Mrs. Buttersworth etc aren't real maple syrup but made from corn syrup I think. Actual maple syrup is a lot thinner an runnier, and also costs a small fortune.

Ah that makes sense. I was seeing prices much higher than what people in this thread were saying, but I was searching specifically for maple syrup.
I'll chime in on syrup being an easy wash off and clean-up. I tend to go with the simple "market pantry"/"great value" and generic walmart/target kind of stuff. If you want a lot, the big jugs from GFS are good, but not really a value. It's a bit higher quality than the generic Walmart kind of stuff, and it's probably cheaper to just by multiple bottles of that generic stuff. Syrup is one I enjoy playing with and usually include in whatever messy fun. The sugar free version of them may or may not be as sticky. Never noticed much of a difference, but haven't really done much comparative testing, as I usually just buy whichever is cheapest.
The one that I really enjoy playing with, but I find to be a real pain to get off is peanut butter (Nutella's even worse, imo, and for that and price reason I never use). For whatever reason, the residue of peanut butter just takes a while for me to get off. Doesn't stop me from using it from time to time, but I find washing it off completely to be a chore.
In the early days we regularly used golden syrup and black treacle in shoots. It's very easy to wash off / out as long as you have patience. Basically, it's just sugar. So get the warm water going and just stand under the flow. No rubbing or scrubbing, just stand and wait - and the syrup and treacle just melts away to nothing in the water flow.
We once covered someone in black treacle, in a wedding dress. Put the warm water hose on them at the end, and the transformation as the black and glistening dress changed back to pure white was truly beautiful to watch. We should probably recreate that and film it.
