Last few years, I've really gotten into Theatrically Released Smut, porn/XXX from the golden age when people actually shot on film, the films were shown in theaters and they actually sometimes had artistic merit (depending upon your tastes, of course).
One of the filmmakers I've become fascinated with is Joe Sarno, who was a prolific hard but especially softcore director who worked throughout the 60s and 70s; there is a WONDERFUL documentary about him/his wife and their work called A LIFE IN DIRTY MOVIES that i recommend checking out.
Anyway, one of his films that appealed to me most/I've since bought a copy of is CONFESSIONS OF A YOUNG AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE. Sarno's films were often kind of simple, not especially glamorous yet also not "dumpy or depressing" soft core soapy melodramas, often about a woman wanting out of/more from her life, sexually/romantically/emotionally/ideologically. So, there's a whole "Swinger" and "Sexy Mother" vibe to this movie, which is oddly more akin to Bergman than XXX, and that's kind of part of the charm of Sarno's work -- it's titillating but they're the kind of porn movies you watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon, y'know?
I really like the lead in CONFESSIONS, Rebecca Brooke, who has a kind of Joan Allen beauty to her; she was in a few of his films, and numerous hardcore porn films as well.
At one point early in the movie, the Mom character (Jennifer Welles) offers up this pie she's made, and I had totally forgotten about it...and that the scene, despite what you see below, ends without the pie ever ending up in Rebecca's (much less anyone's) face. While it's definitely not Sarno's style to go slapstick, it was just such a missed opportunity I practically shouted "You gotta be kidding me?!!" at the screen.
I felt the need to take a few snapshots so you could feel my angst, dear reader and presumed pie fan, but also I figure it's not totally worthless because many of us are also fans of Women Holding Pies, so that's something anyway.
Plus, if this post turns anyone onto the work of Joe Sarno, I will consider it worth having posted for.
