For those who remember this as kids.... It FINALLY showed on YouTube. (I won't post a link because there's kids in a couple shots, although all the pie targets are adults and Muppets.) You can find it by doing a search and looking at recent clips... PumpkinJFriend is the uploader. (He also has a ton of great vintage SS clips up too.)
So I kinda assumed this would be a letdown from a current WAM perspective... and it is. In short: Maria is the only female getting pied, and while she's cute and adorable, none of the hits are good. (She's either wearing a fake nose, or fake glasses, or the tin completely sticks without falling.) Honestly, none of the hits are good. BUT.... The spirit of this clip is still pretty awesome. Especially for Sesame Street, it's just pure insanity. Random gags, quick cuts, Maria as the devil... a WALL getting pied?!?
So maybe I'll remake it, same as I remade "Whipped Cream Pies On The Wall" a few (dozen) times....
Actually, SlapstickStuff fans, does anyone remember when I *did* remake this scene? (Albeit from random memories and a few lyrics found on Google... But I got the nursery rhyme bits right!)
I vividly recalled Maria getting really plastered with the last hit. Hoo-boy, memory didn't serve me too well on that one.
This is very reminiscent of the finally found footage a few years back with the Price is Right Roman-themed showcase that involved a pie in the face gag. Once again my old memory painted a picture of the blonde Barkey Beauty being utterly destroyed with the pie, barely wiping and still completely pied when she unveiled the new car at the end. If anyone is desperate to track the scene down after my description - don't both. It also stank.
It makes me curious. If such weak pieings were enough to fuck with my youthful hardwiring and sentence me to a life-long fetish, I can only imagine the damage some of the current crop of pies are having on today's youth. So much from every corner of the world is so readily available, although we bitch about it all the time, but any given episode of Chega Mais in it's prime was 15 years worth of WAM from when I grew up.
I should say - thank you to the people looking for and finding these moments. Whether they're good or not, the nostalgia is there and it's nice to find out our childhood actually sucked from a WAM perspective and wasn't the Golden Age of Pies our memories tricked us into remembering.
But let's also acknowledge that sometimes, the nostalgic pie hit from your youth DOES live up to the hype. Just thinking:
--The Mandrell sisters (although I actually tracked this on my own before I knew WAM existed, but still... So worth it) --Sheena Easton TISWAS pieing (which I'd never seen, but imagined in my head from the Casey Kasem description... Woo boy, WAY better than I imagined...) --The Cream Pie Maniac (yeah, Rita Moreno is wearing glasses, but I think that's because she knew she'd get plastered--twice!--and stay that way the entire time) --"You're Nasty" (wish a better version would surface)
Honestly, I have no idea if the wealth of amazing pie clips for free online is making WAMmers-to-be even more intense... or burning them out early. Who knows. I do know I wore out some clips on VHS that I'd barely glance at today, because they were the best I could find (and record) at the time. Although some still hold up.... (Moose... Drugs... Nuff said...)

The Vicky Victory scenes that were posted on youtube a few months back held up pretty well. Pretty sure that was my gateway drug.

It's out there. Put Sheena Easton Tiswas into You Tube and is should appear.
Kabo has done a good edited version.
Haha.... I think you misunderstood. The era where I hadn't seen it was 1980-something (not living in England). I first saw the clip 20 years ago, when WAMTEC Mark tracked it down and put it on a VHS cliptape. The version that's been on YT for years is just a dub from that original VHS that I've had for two decades. I think the "edit" by Kabo just steals Mark's original and recuts it.
Which is another way of saying: Clips like this SS one are still a thrill, because invariably most "rare" clips on YT turn out to be ones that us old-timers have already seen....
Hey Rich. Do you remember an X Marks the Spot Pie Skit on Sesame Street? It was a scene I remember seeing about in 1974 and it was my first "hmmmm" moment so to speak. Thanks in Advance!
Mapwhap1 said: I was very pleased to see this one resurface. Thankfully, I recalled it not being a great scene, but I recall enjoying it as a kid just because of the quick cuts and the set ups. Upon reviewing it, although she doesn't take any great hits, I was actually surprised to see how many times Maria got pied. I didn't recall it being that many.
Rich....I'm sure it would be prohibitively expensive to re-make that with multiple girls.... but if you ever decide to, I'd be happy to throw some cash into a "go fund me" type account to make it happen
Yeah, my kid recollection was that Maria got a lot of pies, but none were great. (Like the first one, which is a spot-on hit, but the plate never falls away.) I didn't remember them being all shaving cream, but of course a kid wouldn't really notice that.
I also remembered the David "baker" pie being much better than it was (again, the plate just sticks).... I'm almost sure this is why so many of my current scenes have a "baker" facing to the side and getting pied in similar fashion. Those early memories get hardwired in!
My first "remake" wasn't bad, given that it was all from memory. And having Toshia play every single role saved on the cost. Honestly, doing a lot of quick one-pie scenes doesn't make sense financially, because the bulk of the time is the models cleaning up between them, and it's not like they're charging you LESS for less pies. So I'm not sure I'd do a true remake with multiple models. But we'll see.
Definitely check out the SS100 scene if you never did originally. It has the nursery rhyme bits (plus Simple Simon, because of course).... The baker with a lot more pies... And also a variation on the "adding/subtracting dancers" bit that SS did, albeit with pies added.

I honestly have NO recollection. Tell me more! I didn't see Surprise when it originally aired. I must've caught a later episode where they reran it... circa 1980 or 1981? So if X Marks the Spot never reran, I would've missed it.
There is one more Sesame Street pie scene I remember. You don't see the hit, but there is a good close-up of a very pied Maria. Essentially she peeks into Oscar's dustbin to see what he's up to, and emerges with a very creamy face. And Oscar says "that'll teach her to be so nosey" or something similar.

Might be the same clip, but it's a bit later than my era, and Oscar (or someone near him) "throws" a pie OC... and then Maria walks on with her face covered. Clearly applied shaving cream, but the coverage was pretty good.
I really need to find it now... I think it was on a Hurley tape??
In general, SS did very few pie scenes, and Maria and Linda were the only females ever involved. (I think the two clips where Linda signs "pie" are her only scenes?) Electric Company had many more pie scenes (again skewing towards the males).... And not all of those have surfaced yet. But YT doesn't seem as interested with tracking those lost clips anymore.
Not sure if anyone cares, but I DID track down the Maria pie clip I mentioned. Not the same as the dustbin one.
The irony: This was after "my" era, so I had no (skewed) memories of it. When I finally saw it, I'd seen MANY other pie clips, so it didn't really stand out. And yet... It's easily the best pieing Maria ever took on the show that's surfaced (even tho the pie was applied OC). If I'd seen it during my adolescence, I'm sure it would've been burned into my brain. Ah well...
