I've done pie play with real pies plus fake ones made with shaving cream, whipped cream, yogurt, cool whip, cake frosting, pudding...but i've never used sour cream.- is this hard on the eyes or is it about the same as any other standard type of "prop" pie creams?
Ounce per ounce, sour cream is more expensive than yogurt. It's also more firm. I wouldn't recommend using it straight. I've talked to people who cut both it and yogurt with cool whip. I've found it has a nice splatter
It's cons really depend on what you find most important. Yogurt is a little cheaper per ounce, but it also runnier. They hold their color really well, when you add color to them and mix well.
I haven't found any really good items that you can use immediately out of the container with best results. Everything takes some kind f changing or adulteration. Canned whipped cream seems to be the only exception, depending on your taste, but it melts really fast, so not ideal for longer sets. Sour cream and yogurt have staying power, but a short shelf life. Shaving cream is very stiff, but can be modified, and has more staying power than canned whipped cream, but less than dairy products.
