I was watching this decent clip that Pinhead shared with us. It was a good clip, but it featured one aspect that I personally HATE. Before the girl takes her first pie, he puts a little on her nose/chin and THEN nails her. He ruined a nice clean palette! Its a first world problem, but .....hey, it bugs me.
sometimes it creates further teasing, humiliation and/or build-up.
but sometimes it just feels unnecessary or weakens the scenario -- i sometimes feel like it happens in scenes that are more playful from non-WAM types, i.e. stuff you'd find on YouTube, and i think that's the kind i don't really like where you're just like "Well, now you're just dicking around...i bet she won't even get pied...?"
in general, i do like a clean palette but i guess i don't feel like violently "NOOOOOOOOO!! YOU ROOOOONED IT!" about it.

If it just a You Tube clip that I will watch once regardless, I will consider it a mild disappointment. If it is a custom video I paid for, then it is most definitely "NOOOOOOOO!! YOU ROOOOOOOOONED IT!!"

If it's a custom you paid for then the producer should definitely have cleared that with you before doing it, along with pie composition and delivery method (thrown vs smushed). Given the standard way to deliver a pie to someone is one big splat to an initially clean face, any variation on that should have been raised and approved at the detail negotiation stage.

I will say this video did have one of my weird pet peeves: the girl is in the process of getting pied good, bails out before total coverage, bitches about it, and then obliterates the guys who stands there like a statue for her. He then pied her on top of the head. There's a reason pie fights in movies aren't pie-to-the-head fights. They're about 10% as shocking, don't create near the comeuppance, and just don't create the comedic tension.
I agree with your pitcher of water analogy completely. As for the pie on the head, he can pie her head if he STARTS with her face and slides it up to the top of her head after.
