L&H had some magnificent mess in the late 20's. "The Battle of the Century" features the greatest yet-known pie scene of all filmdom. "Two Tars" is where you find the woman enduring a face full of motor oil. The rice-in-face is from "Hoosgow" There are many others, and these are great. They really understood not holding back, when it came to silky slapstick.
I always wondered what cleanup was like and how fast the actor was availed of it. I'm told the rice was hard to clean out of hair and lasted for weeks.
I remember that Laurel & Hardy mud scene from way back. I used to scour those tv guides back in the 70's for anything that might have some Wam in it, and saw a promising program that aired at 2:30 am featuring L&H. Being up that late was out of the question for a 7th grader, but I set my alarm for 2:25 and snuck downstairs to view it. These screen caps were that episode! Its weird how excited I got at the time considering how jaded I am now. Thanks for the pics, StrapOnPiegirls!
Thanks again Straponpiegirls!! I've been looking for this childhood memory for years as described in this post: https://umd.net/forums/i/pop_culture_origin_of_your_fet?start=30#411625. I got some of the details wrong but most of it is baked in pretty well -- especially that second pie hit! There's also a scene earlier in the short where an (elderly) woman is completely submerged in a mud hole. The quality of this guy's upload is pretty good (mud hole at 17:20 mark, pie hits at 20:00 mark):
Anyone nominate you for WotD yet? You sure deserve it for this service. In my opinion, the current title holder MyPierogative can be WotD for as long as she likes (she's awesome) but, if she ever gets tired of it, I really think you deserve WotD for posting these awesome stills, which I assume you had to capture from video yourself.
